What is the greatest song ever written?

Anything by the cheeky girls.
Both of whom, at least in 2021, were working in Hyundai dealerships.

Anyway, back on topic, and I only have an opinion on pop music because I am a heathen.

Greatest pop song ever written: "Runaway" by Del Shannon.

Honourable mentions to "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane and Airport by The Motors.

Going to add my favourite Beatles' song too, and that is "A Day in the Life".

I've always thought that these four are absolutely untouchable:

Won't Get Fooled Again
Gimme Shelter
Comfortably Numb
Time (Floyd)

Then perhaps

Freebird
Layla
Stairway (though personally I prefer Battle of Evermore)

Then everything else.

My personal preference is for alternative and punk and I find it hard to compare classic rock with that. It's like comparing Salvador Dali to Leonardo Da Vinci.

Won’t Get Fooled Again is my favo(u)rite song of all time.

I like your other choices too.

I like Wish You Were Here for Pink Floyd and Can’t You Hear Me Knocking for the Stones.

Personally among the Skynyrd canon I think Sweet Home Alabama is better than Freebird, but my favo(u)rite of theirs is Saturday Night Special — the best anti-gun song I know.

Kashmir or Carouselambra for Led Zep (or The Song Remains the Same or The Ocean or Levee).

Clapton Layla I guess but not as big a fan of his music.

I’ll throw in "Alright Now" by Free.

Any song that speaks of your life and hits the spot is the greatest.
When I was 16 it was ‘When You’e Young’ by The Jam. It summed life up … “life is a drink and you get drunk when you’re young”.

Now l identify more with the lyrics of ‘Living Too Late” by The Fall …

“Sometimes life is like a new bar
Plastic seats, beer below par
Food with no taste, music grates
I'm living too late

Once talking was my favourite while
But now I know a conversation's end
Before it's done
Maybe I'm living too long”

… or maybe I’ve just become a FOC.
