A family's candlelit tribute to tragic singer Whitney Houston ended in disaster when it set fire to their home. A woman and her son lit the candle in memory of the star, who was found dead in a bath in a hotel in Beverly Hills. But they were forced to flee for their own lives when it set fire to their living room. They were asleep upstairs but were alerted by a smoke alarm and were able to get out unhurt. They were treated at the scene for shock. Watch commander Rick Taylor from Oldham fire station said: "The blaze quickly spread from the curtains to the TV and electrics. "It caused thick black smoke but thankfully the residents had a working smoke alarm which gave them an early warning." The blaze gutted the living room of the semi-detached house in Hodge Clough Road, Sholver, Oldham. Three dogs were all rescued unharmed by fire crews from Oldham and Chadderton who tackled the blaze which started about 2.30am yesterday. Watch commander Taylor added: "The candle had not been completely extinguished when the residents went to bed. "I would urge people to take extra care when using candles. "This was a very serious fire which could have had devastating consequences had there not been a smoke alarm." The family declined to comment.

I had to laugh at this story when i read the womans reaction
"Everyone has candles these days but you don't realise how dangerous they are," she said
