John Stones - 2016/17 performances

I have been somewhat underwhelmed by him. He's good in possession but I always get the impression that he could make a catastrophic error at any given time. If I were to give him a rating out of the 10 for his performances this season, I would give him a generous 6.

Our defence is rather shambolic when you consider how much we have spent in recent years. Mangala flopped. Otamendi and Stones are error prone. And Bravo is allergic to making saves.

To be fair to Stones, it would be difficult to look good playing with Clichy and Otamendi.

I think he seems to be improving steadily as the season progresses. If Kompany had been fit and playing alongside him, he would have progressed further this season.

Some may disagree but I want to see him him build himself up a little.

Vinny never got bullied and it was one of the reasons he stood out.

I think if your a Costa you look at Stones and think physically I can have him.

If he can blend his ball playing with good physical defending he will be a beast.

I'd like to see him play alongside Vinny for at least a few games, I think we would know far more about Stones after it. At the moment, I don't see anything like a top defender, I see glimpses of something, I'm just not sure what.

He's been playing really well for the last 5-6 games.

Felt a lack of communication has been a big problem at the back for us this season. Though last night you could see Vinny hollering at Stones and instructing him where to be etc, he would have learnt a lot in those 90mins.

Kompany was hollering at Stones, but Stones spent just as much time hollering at Navas. Stones would definitely improve playing alongside Kompany, but he would also improve if we had better full backs. He's spent too much time this season thrying to organise a shaky defence when, at this stage of his development, he should be concentrating more on his own game.

This might sound Crazy but I think Stones should be 3rd choice next season. We should snap Pepe up as a stop gap 2yr CB partner alongside Vinny. Stones still has a lot to learn and while the PL might be forgiving the UCL certainly isn't. Pepe and Vinny in the UCL would be brilliant, Stones can get the simple PL games and sit out the decisive top 4 games. He is still young and would come good, but you can't afford to use a season full of promises as a learning curve. We must find the balance.

Stopped reading at Pepe. Not a fucking chance.

FYI reputable tabloids in Spain has it that we are really interested in Pepe. He was supposed to go to China as RM allowed his contract run down. Now its a two way battle between City and PSG for Pepe. We would be stupid if we allow Pepe go to PSG. At 34 he can still give us 2yrs. Stones is NOT READY yet.

Sorry mate we'll have to disagree. Pepe's well past it and I'd rather spend two years with Stones allowing him to make mistakes than two years of Pepe getting worse and worse. On top of that I'd guarantee it would take at least six months for him to get up to speed. If it's as a squad player I could just about understand (I don't want him around anyway because he's a ****) but we'd be mad to go into next season with him as a starter.

Letting him go to PSG would not be crazy whatsoever given that they're not a rival.

For all his defensive 'qualities' I think Stonesy would not trouble Joleoninho in the scoring stakes. Joleon always seemed to nick a goal at crucial moments. Stones seems to have some of the best chances you'd see all season when he does get in front of goal but 'rabbit in headlights'!

Did it take MDM six months? would you compare Pepe a younger, faster, stronger ,better defender to MDM? Yet MDM gave us a great season. Pepe already plays for a team as physical and fast as any PL team so why would it take him 6 months to get up to speed? If Pep wants Pepe then he has my support any day.

Let's say Pep wants to copy his Barca CDs back than, Puyol and Piquet. What combo comes closest to these two? I'd say Kompany (Puyol) and Stones (Piquet). I see a lot of potential in Stones and another player who I expect to shine next term for completing his learning curve this year.

He looks a good footballer but does he look a good defender? Last night we watched a guy who has barely kicked a ball for 2 years come back into the side and look a good defender. I've yet to see anything like that from Stones but in fairness hes been playing alongside 3 mongs all season. I'm hoping a few games alongside Vinny will show us what we paid all that money for.

costa didn't get past him once and he has been really good defensively since the new year.

other then the one chance last night near the end, i can't think of many times where hes had 'the best chances you'd see all season'.
