It's Quiet - a new dawn

I really do not think it's an absurd thing to consider a 4-4-2 type formation or its similar variants. Yes we loathed the way we used Dzeko and Aguero in many games where we should have been tighter in midfield but we also saw the way Negredo and Aguero tore the EPL to shreds together. So in my opinion, the deciding factor whether it would work or not is the personnel available for this system. Moreover, as exciting as our attack is right now, we have only managed 60 odd goals so far whilst we scored over 100 in 2013/14 largely because we had 2 upfront. Defence was nothing special but we outscored everyone and went ahead to win. I know Jesus was not involved for much of the campaign but are we saying we should go into a new season without making provision for injuries or whatever it is that could make us loose the services of any one key player in that attacking line? I know that 2 attackers this summer is a bit of a stretch considering that we have other areas that need urgent fixing and the fact that we have world class mids who would be made redundant should we sign 2 forwards, but we need one more attacker in our starting 11.
Maldeika's post below highlights the reason why Silva is not Alcantara (not in terms of ability but function) and so for the sake of balance and the need to play to our strenghts, I wouldn't recommend a 4-4-2 type system not because it's bad but for the reasons given above

Of course it's possible to use 442 & with the right signinsg, it would be easy to adapt this squad to play it. Even under Pep, I could imagine for instance, if Unal had a good pre season, Pep thinking he could sometimes switch to a kind of 442 with him involved & I could imagine it being a real threat to play against.

But this is the transfer forum & half the talk on it, is about signing players then finding ways to shoehorn them into bizarre, unlikely formations, with everyone playing out of position, (unlikely includes 442 if you are Guardiola) & it's as if Manuel Pellegrini has come back.

This window surely, at last, we will at least try to sign players who actually fit into a plan for a balanced team formation, not so we can play wingers at fullback & have one player in midfield & an army of strikers.

If we sign two attackers, one will surely be to replace Aguero should he leave. The other requirement, I would imagine, is an alternative to Sane & Sterling, should they lose form or get injured (we don't want Navas there).

I would imagine if we sign Mbappe, it's simply because we want that player, come what may, & not as a plan to shoehorn him into a team. Then we will be looking to move someone on, to balance it, not play all of them in the same team.

Just to stick my two penneth into the 442 debate. Went to see a mate last week who lives in Alderley Edge. Went for a coffee and found ourselves on a table next to Zabaleta and his wife. Owen Hargreaves came in and they had a quick chat which I eavesdropped. Hargreaves asked him what's he doing next year and Zaba said he'd been offered a 1 year extension but probably won't take it cos he's a 442 fullback who works the flank and Guardiola doesn't play that system and wants to use numerous styles, non of which really suit his game.
So I'd hazard a guess 442 isn't an option moving forward.

Nice info, cheers.

What I would like to see, two beast centrehalf and two ball playing centre halfs, Kompany shielding the back 3 with Stones adm Laporte carrying the ball out of defence. This also means we have a big threat from set pieces and powerful setplay defense. Silva and De Bruyne look forward to see incredible pace up top and in the channels. Jesus can drop into midfield and have awesome press with those front 4

Is this possible?

I would turn that back on you.

Would you fancy seeing Stones & Laporte vs Sterling & Sané running in behind them, with Gabriel Jesus doing both & also going through the middle ?

I think you need Roy Keane & Colin Bell in place of Silva & DeBruyne.

Have kompany and Van Dijk as alternating and have a top centre midfielder there and I think that side is ace.

Luckily we have Sterling and Sane not our opponents, the defense looks very solid to me, granted Kompany would have to do a lot of work shielding the defense and Silva and De Bruyne would have to work back also, but we need to defend from the front initially.

The thought of Roy Keane makes me sick :( Colin Bell and David Silva in the same team though, wow is that a wet dream

I mean two top quality players who can defend like defenders & attack like attacking mids or forwards.

That setup would likely get it's arse ripped out by Monaco or Real or even Liverpool or Spurs imo. Or at least would be in the position of needing 3 goals to win a game.

I think that's agreat side. I'd take out Kompany for Gundogan or Marcos Llorente.

If you do that then you have a team.

That's because you don't understand how it would work.

It's because I have seen John Stones play. But I'm sure when Lukaku or Falcao tore him a new arsehole 1v1, he was fine on the computer, which is all that matters.
Yes, coz the definition of every player can be boiled down to 2 acts. Fantastic reasoning there Mr. Simplistic.

we need to replace Yaya for certain....not like for like as that is pretty much impossible but we do need someone else....no idea who that player is though

The more and more i see KDB the more I'm sure he aint suited to what Pep wants from him int he position he is playing him in....maybe Pep has something else in mind for KDB and we will see a change in role for next year but something needs to change there.

We need another centre half....Kompany has shown in the last few weeks how much we have missed him but we need to be able to lose him again and not suffer so much cause of it....Id replace both Kolarov/Ottomendi with Bonnucci and Laporte (but maybe both is wishful thinking )

Clichy has been better in the last few games but we need a better left back and right back is obvious......Im hoping for Fabhno, Henrichs or someone like them

Those would be my priorities for the summer and then the icing on the cake would be Mbappe/Sanchez/both

I'm watching the clasico and in the light of our performance today it's just so apparent we are just miles away from the level of these teams, let alone Peps Barca or Mourinho's Real who were much better than these two incarnations.

The way they move the ball, the way they play out the speed of thought, the movement...we're two levels below in everything.

4 or 5 world class players are needed and the owners just have to give Pep what he needs, and us fans just have to accept it and appreciate he knows better than anyone what a great side looks like.

If he wants to get rid of everyone or anyone in the squad to make that happen then that's what needs to be done.

Was thinking the same thing. I think you peeped into my mind and did a copy and paste
