Jesus Navas

Re Maffeo, I recon he was being tested out for the job by Pep & wheras he played a blinder v Utd, Pep tried to get him playing in an attacking mode in that CL game, & he just wouldn't do it, he was hanging back.

I think that's where Pep wants him to improve. Without that side to his game I don't think Pep would use him.

Yet happily uses Navas who despite being a winger has zero attacking ability at all.

I suspect those six are the priority positions AND i suspect that the player criteria is that they should be ready roll in terms of performance/ability.
Goes without saying that the GK and fullbacks need to be able to hit the ground running, but we'll have time to bed in the other positions (unless we're stupid enough to get rid of Sergio, in which case there's absolutely zero room for error with the replacement if we want a Champions League spot next season).

Encouraged by recent Aguero comments about how he's actually happy as a 2nd striker & only City made him a cf. Suggests he is thinking about playing in a team with Jesus.

Haven't seen them, link?

Hopefully he stays, makes no sense to get rid, especially with his timeline for going back to Argentina timing so well with our young front 3 coming into their prime years.

That's not fair tbh. He fucks up more crosses than he should but he also puts some in which should be scored & if Pep tells him he has to push forward, he pushes forward.

His crossing is awful for someone who has played that position I imagine most of his life. I wont dispute he will run his bollocks off up and down but if Maffeo isn't getting a look in because of what he (doesn't) give going forward then the same applies to Navas.

For a winger. He's a dangerous full back.

Dangerous to who?

Dunno where the link is, but it quotes him saying he wasn't a cf. Interesting that he's played about 100 mins with GJ & set him up for two 'goals'.

It doesn't apply the same. Maffeo was not attacking the space when Pep played him in an attacking position, it's as simple as that.

Think the DM will have to hit the ground running too!

He's always been able to play in a two, was lethal at times with Džeko/Tevez/Negredo/Forlan. People attach to much importance to assists when for the last few seasons he's been the only reliable finisher (has set up plenty of missed chances) and a lot more goes into creating opportunities than simply being the lad playing the final pass.

Not as much with the options we have there, they'll have time to find their feet, whereas the knives will be out for the keeper from the first mistake and we don't have any bloody options at fullback as it stands.

if you think Navas is weak going forward from right back, then you will be gutted if we buy a normal right back. Zabaleta was an outstanding attacking right back but even at his best he was not as good as Navas going forward. The problem with Navas is that he doesn't have the defensive game that Zabaleta, and Sagna have
hahahaha what is this based on, one decent game against an average Southampton side?

Navas is just another weak link in the squad who needs to be shifted imo. Hopefully the new contract thing is just paper talk.

You think Pep will try Navas at full back next season then? ;)

What I would like to see at City is a genuine 3 up top kind of situation like Barca at their best had. Aguero could play anywhere in that, as could GJ & Sane. The odd man out is Sterling who could play it, but needs to convert more chances into goals.

Then the problem is, how you accomodate Silva & DeBruyne into that without either having one of them in the front 3 or letting 4 goals in.

Perhaps, having two fast fullbacks to help midfield/defence ,& close down two yards quicker, will solve it.

If the rumoured extension is signed I'm sure we'll see him there plenty, regardless of who we sign it's madness expecting fullbacks to play more than 40 games a season in the modern era imo. However whoever comes in needs to be comfortably the better of the two.
