My point is there are a lot of things that go into being Basque. If you want to define him as Basque go for it. But the original point that he stayed at Bilbao out of some sort of loyalty to his Basque heritage just doesn't wash.

People said that he was being loyal to his club because he's Basque, no one mentioned his heritage.

When Basque kids go to Bilbao, the Basque identity is really aggressively baked into them, the kids get told that playing for Bilbao is representing the basque country and the thing a player can be most proud of, while people who leave are almost betraying their people, the community and the club that raised them for financial gain.

He's had that mentality pushed on him for the best part of a decade and it makes the players incredibly loyal to their club, which is why they manage to keep a Europa level team together despite having such a small pool of players to pick from.

It's completely plausible to say that not wanting to betray that would play a part in his decision, and especially on the back of the broken leg which would have raised doubts about the move anyway.

Obviously people are getting annoyed by the continuation of this line of discussion.. so if you really feel the need to continue this, reply in the Laporte thread karen linked, but I really don't think there's much else to say.

Again that would prove nothing, as if the club was happy for him to go they'd not give him the betrayal push, and the local media would follow suit, praising the amount he goes for as paying the club back etc. It's political.

Laporte thread though, seriously!
 



Has anyone seen this goal article? It's not from Lee, but I was wondering if it was written by the (apparently trustworthy) Brazilian goal journalist who wrote the original Sandro piece.
 
Not saying it's a factor but the basque region was known for its protection rackets and the intimidation of people to give money to separatist elements like ETA etc a bit like parts old Ireland during the troubles. Perhaps poor old Laporte was leaned on to stay a bit like old Stevie G was at the dippers.

Unless he told them how would they know he was going to watch Sandro? Are we not rumoured to be buying half the players from both teams.

At the time I remember one of his reasons for staying at Bilbao was because they had shown loyalty to him through his ankle injury so signed a new contract with a higher release as a sort of thankyou
