I think you have a romanticized view of the past. Which forces you into this cornwr of deeming only world class defenders good. It silly. Every generation had great defenders, good ones, average ones and bad ones. Its no more different now than it was then. You just have a poor memory of it all.

Micah!?! I mean, he was my favorite City fullback by a mile. Coz watching him attack was like watching Yaya at fullback. But defensively, Micah had one of the worst positioning for a fullback. I mean folks here used to suggest he should be moved to CB and soft Boateng play RB. That Micah?

Like I said, you have a rosy view of history. No wonder you only mention players like Lahm and Zaba. One perhaps a stone throw from being the best fullback ever and the other perhaps the best fullback in the prem for 3 years. Seriously? A player isn't good of he is not one of the best ever?

I hope you've restrict this reasoning to just defenders, coz if you apply the same logic to attacking players, you'd. Find yourself concluding Hazard and Sanchez aren't all that. I mean, they are not like Messi, the real and Fake Ronaldos who hit 35 goals with ease in multiple years.

That's some standard.

The criticism of Micah was his running up & down the wing, which was poor when he wasn't fit & soso when he was. As a defender, when fit, he was better than Kyle Walker, Clichy, Sagna, Kolarov, Trippier, anyone from Liverpool, Arsenal, Utd Chelsea, etc etc.

I also mentioned Tony Book.

He was a legend, but tbh, he wasn't really that great. Still tackled George Best.

Currrent bunch wouldn't get near him. Defending is currently not a dying art, it's close to dead.

Funnily enough it was Micah I was thinking of earlier.
When Walker took his place in the England team he was far better than Walker. I don't think Walker knows how to defend, which is a bit of a problem in my eyes

Exactly, Micah was better by a fair distance & many of us were laughing at the ridiculous London bias of him getting the job.

Nowardays, of course Walker's defending is a worry but tbh, who can we sign in that position, who could actually defend any better ?

Southampton's right back always looks good to me defensively but I'm not sure how he is going forwards. I assume there are plenty of full backs around Europe who can defend but I also assume defensive ability will be down the list of requirements behind being able to get forward effectively and being able to use the ball well. Now I don't dispute that those two things should be important but until being able to defend is put right at the top of the requirements when we sign defenders, I'm not sure we are going to get where we want to be. But I realise that view makes me old fashioned.

I think it's at least necessary to be competent defensively.

And imo, that's as good as we will get.

He improves the team & is one of the most risk-free RB options out there. We know what we're getting with him. Gives us a bit more height at fullback too which is sometimes under appreciated.

Wouldn't have too many complaints if we get him.

Well if we are going to sign full backs who are merely competent at defending, I sincerely hope we sign a central defender who is excellent at defending. Otherwise we are going to be in a situation where we will be relying on kompany to play every match and try to hold the whole thing together. Plenty of supporters seem to think getting a couple of new full backs will magically get us challenging for the title. I'm not remotely convinced.

I think it may be a cumulative effect. Upgrade each area by 20% in ability, plus perhaps pace & fitness & the whole thing becomes considerably better.

How can anyone possibly whinge about Walker. Is fast, strong, can defend and the best right back in the league id say. Yet some people want some obscure Portuguese player that's had a good half season. Walker would be a fantastic signing and a 0% gamble. It's a yes from me.
The above.

Unsure on this one, I feel a bit like Indid when we signed Bellamy (so hopefully that's a good sign)

Really happy with Walker. Strong, PL proven and one of the best right backs in the league. Just need to sort the LB position out and we would be alright in defense. BTW, is there any price that has been quoted for Walker?

Walker is a tw@. Cannot stand him. The big difference is if he does sign he is then our tw@

I don't think it’s done and dusted but it’s very obvious we in for him.

Walker won’t be the problem.

It will be Levy.
He will drag this out all summer if it gets him more money and if Utd are in for him to he will really drag his heels and play us off against one another.

Just a snippet I heard mate.
