Explosion at MEN Arena/Victoria Station

I went down to St Annes Square today for the first time since the attack, absolutely devastated by the experience. The thing i wasn't expecting was how quiet it would be, not ashamed to say I was holding back the tears.

No shame in that whatsoever. I don't remember crying so much in a week in a long, long time.

However one thing that has changed is my resolve. I used to think should an atrocity take place in Manchester it would mean me thinking twice about going to the Trafford Centre, the Etihad etc. Instead it makes me even more determined to go and live my life.

Yeah, was down there earlier today myself. Was packed but eerily quiet.

There was a silent and dignified demonstration from a number of Kurds against both ISIS and oppression of the Kurds in Turkey. Also noticed on Market Street a stand had been set up proclaiming Islam Against Extremism and passers-by were walking up to have a chat.

Beautiful to watch.

As for some of the comments on the article, hang your heads in shame!

Some of the comments are an utter disgrace.

What's struck me this week is that so many have shunned the extremist view following the attack. I'm anything but a so-called bleeding heart liberal and it's right that certain questions should be asked but the importance of not tarring everyone with the same brush and the vast majority sticking together has hit home more than ever this past week.

Yep, he and the other reported homeless person that helped have had enough on their plate as it is, never mind now with the things he's seen he's gonna have to deal with. Everyone who attended that scene is a victim that need the best of help and support offered to them.

On the fire service - I would have thought whatever explosion fire crews should be some of the first to the scene incase anything is on fire/assess structural damage etc.? That's the most surprising thing to me as to why you were held back.
Weren't they held back as police thought there were shooters on the scene as well, and had to clear that treat before allowing others on the scene?

Not for two bloody hours, it was clear after the first 10 mins what was going on a regardless they should have like they did with the paramedics asked for volunteers

Don't know about two hours fella, but it would certainly take more than 10 minutes to clear that scene.

If the police, paramedics and members of the public are running in and we aren't there is something wrong, it was clear it was a bomb and not a MTFA incident, yes there could be another bomb but it's our job to take that risk.

Good point. Armed police should be first on the scene in such circumstances for the reason you say then. Clear that the services need to communicate to establish an agreed procedure after this.

Sorry if i've missed it, have you been given a reason at all as to why they held you back 2 hours? Not to sound cynical but I know the cuts GM fire service had to adjust for, do you think long-term staff issues after attending such a scene played on their mind (i.e. losing staff to a lot of sick time/counselling/rehab)?

NOpe our chief has gone on holiday and his deputy (who's retiring next month) was called back off leave, make of thatvwhat you will, we have heard nothing from the top for a week. As for the staff issues that should be furthest from anyone's thoughts in this incident

Mods, why the censorship of posts ?
We understand that there is considerable anger at what happened last Monday, but you made an accusation against a person that we can't verify is true, and which has certainly not been reported in any mainstream media. We don't accept extreme views from either side of the debate, for good reason.

I've not read every post since the first few days but I do try to read some as I can. I saw today online the FBI warned MI5 that Abedi was planning a bombing/act of terrorism.

I understand the government can't watch and control all would be terrorists but isn't this as clear of a warning flag ad can be flown? Ok, he hadn't committed a crime yet but perhaps some nice men and or women go to his and let him know 'We're on to you. We'll be watching." I don't know hindsight 20-20 and all that.

It just hurts that an intelligence/investigative service sent out a warning about this m'fer and he still pulled it off and caused heartache to so many...

I don't mean to be cynical and i'm always happy to give credit where it's due, but this story doesn't really make that much sense to me. The offer of counselling and a flight home would have been useful if it had happened whilst he was already out there and in desperate need to get home. As it was, this was three days after the event and the journalist concerned had still flown to Sweden of his own volition. Seem like a bit of an empty story designed purely to make someone look good.

That was my interpretation of it too
