A CB is clearly not a priority (that doesn't mean we wont sign one); obviously another attacking MF, a goal keeper and fullbacks are where Pep wants to spend the bulk of the money this summer. Along with Alexis Sanchez, those positions we need top signings for. My point was that because Kompany has played without injury and played well, a top CB signing is not necessary. I believe we will sign a CB this summer (I hope we do) but imo it doesn't need to a 60m/ Kompany replacement signing. Someone like Pepe from Real Madrid would be a great CB signing on a free transfer this summer, small 2 year contract. Then bring in left-footed CB Lucas Hernandez next summer from Atletico...

If that's 'your point' then it isn't a very good one. Relying on Kompany to stay fit is a completely unnecessary and dangerous gamble. We need to buy someone with similar attributes (tall, quick, strong, able to defend open spaces and take responsibility), cos Stones, Kolarov and Otamendi are each deficient in at least one of those attributes.

Kompany is a starter if fit, Stones can only get better alongside him and Otamendi has been good this season; Kolarov too has been solid as CB, can see why City aren't prepared to splash all that money on the position.

Yeah everything seems fine when Kompanys fit, then it starts to get ugly when otamendi and stones are playing together for the rest of the season.

Pep might have plans to play Yaya at centre back like he did at Barcelona. So we have Kompany Otemendi Stones Kolorav and yaya for the centre back spot oh and Tosin. Plenty of cover go all out for Sanchez

Well Aleks isn't going anywhere in the final year of his deal and Vinny has earned the right to be number 1 again.

If we do go in for a CB, I guarantee it'll be Boateng first and not VVD.

Boateng was pretty gutless last time he was here, albeit that he was played out of position a lot. However, I'd take him for sure if Bayern are selling. The point is we cannot rely on Kompany

A goalkeeper & fullbacks you say ? It's a long shot but worth a bet

Lol by that I mean I can't see us signing anyone else. Basically we'll sign Ederson, Mendy and a right back (Walker?), and that's our transfer window finished.

I'll be surprised if we sign another centre back and forwards.

Continually losing your best players must really piss you off,i know it would me.

You have a great academy though, and while it does hurt.....and this may be a one off for us,please continue to fleece the Dippers at every opportunity.

Regarding Virgil, what do you see as his weaknesses?

For a Club our size the best players are always willing to leave if another Club would treble wages. I know I would but, Saints will only sell on their terms.
I don't get to upset by it because I trust those in charge to find the next (profit making) Lovren, Alderweireld or VVD well, they have up to now.

Only thing I've seen cock up is being caught out of position a couple of times but, tell me of a defender that hasn't.

60m is a piss take. Christ.

He's good but actually baffles me how we didn't spot his talent when we landed Denayer to Celtic. Surely we had scouts watching him on a weekly frigging basis.

This is my main gripe. We wait for a player to have a break out year elsewhere and then pay triple.

60m boils my piss to be honest. Southampton are hardly in a position of power. Hope to god that price is a massive exaggeration.

I think Saints have all the power in this one. VVD has 5ish years left on his contract, a few Clubs wanting to buy Saints not wanting to sell and don't need the money.

Would like him to stay for another season or two though!

I was like yup, yup, yup then I read what you said about Kolarov and it felt deflating,he needs to be gone,no matter who comes in or not

Please be a clarkie.

Prepare to be surprised my friend .

Not signing a centre back for the new season would be as much of a mistake as starting with the same goalkeeper options in my opinion. Fortunately that's not a choice because Willy's left.

Van Dijk, although not the be all and end all of options in that position, is still a superb player and going from seeing his name linked with us to reading mentions of Mangala on here again is depressing.

Yes, Otamendi finished the season in good form and yes, I believe Stones will eventually go on to become a top level centre back but our quality in that department more or less hinges on Kompany staying fit and that's not good enough for a team wanting to compete at the top.

Thankfully, it's early June.

With you totally on this .

Will be one of the best signings of the window. Liverpool beating us and Chelsea to him is a big statement.

Who knows? To me, it sounds like Liverpool were the only side willing to meet the price tag S'hampton put on his head.
Understandable, too. Damn good player, but we can't keep overpaying for defenders.
If we don't overpay on him, we'll just overpay on the next one. I suppose it's down to how much we want him, and whether we'd all promise to stay 'till the end to clap him off......so, if we don't land him it's down to the Family Stand fucking off early.......BASTARDS!
