Maybe we'll see Stones in midfield this season if we end up with VVD, Kompany and Otamendi all fit and ready at the back. He likes the type of player in midfield who can, tackle, read the game and go forward when needed.

van Dijk has a ceiling that can be fulfilled with the right players and manager around him. He's already physical and a strong attacking presence up front with pace. His biggest weakness to me is gettin caught out of position during a counter, which is to be fair not much of his doing because being tall he's expected to be up top, and the DM and another defender covering the defence.

If we get Mendy, we have a physically formidable defence and harder to mark in corners and set pieces. Then again, Mangala was meant to be a physical presence.

His recovery pace came in handy on more than one occasion, Mangala's problem was his positioning and the mental side of defending not the physical.

So where does VVD fit into the puzzle if Vinny stays fit? Or, to phrase it another way, would we really invest over £50m on a CB who wouldn't be first choice in the position unless injuries happen? (and would he even want to come under those terms?)

I'm all for our interest here, but if Pep is that high on Kompany then maybe this isn't the right target. Vinny's fitness is a gamble in either direction.
