Kylian Mbappe

Have a feeling we no longer outbid everyone for players, hence the rags having a clear run at Carlton.
If they don't want to come, we move on to the next...But am a greedy ****, don't want to miss out on one of the best young talent in world football.
Our central defence isn't as bad as some would have you believe, not many defenders out there will improve us now VVD is apparently off to the dippers. Throw the VVD+Sanchez money at Monaco, have his mates Benardo and Mendy put in a word and BOOM. Attack sorted for the next decade.

Can someone explain to me what they see in mbappe, I still dont get the hype

Just look back at our game vs Monaco...

I think he is worth every penny. This could be the difference winnig the UCL or not. Winning UCL will easily pay it off. Kit sale, full stadium, this is big businnes. Just like Florentino thinks i RM.....

I personally think we should go all in for him....

I think we've already signed the best player for Monaco against us (home leg at least) and he cost a third of what Mbappe's supposedly going for and is just 22.

For the prices mooted, you'd want to be buying the finished article. At the moment you're gambling on a teenager fulfilling his potential.

I agree, Mbappe basically done an Iheanacho job against us, good movement/right place right time then not much else

How you can be sure the player will be worth every penny is beyond me. You EXPECT him to be just that.
For every other reason you mention I just say we now have Gabriel Jesus who willl enjoy a full preseason and has a few months of experience in the PL. Mbpappa will cost us over a 100mill more than Jesus. Over a hundred million more! Not my money but I'd rather we spent big on two or three players we really need and are top class in their position rather than overspend on one player when questioning where to play him or where others should play when he is a starter. Unless we sell Aguero and Sterling to pay the fee, just like Real seems to do (and did when they got Bale).

It's not that I don't rate Mbappe - I haven't seen nearly enough of him to make a judgement. I'm saying that the price mooted is way too high for a player who is 80% potential and 20% current ability. I'd imagine that we could pay less for Bale, Griezmann or Dybala, all of whom have similar ceilings to Mbappe (maybe slightly lower for argument's sake) but are so much further on their way to reaching that potential.

I think people are swayed by the 'next Henry' appeal of the kid. But there have been plenty of players dubbed the 'next Henry' from Reyes to Martial - none worth £130m.

It's been repeated a hundred times...if Arsenal, city, united, and RM are all willing to pay over 100£m then there sure as shit is way more there than just 'potential'.

Comparing Jesus fee to Mbappes is silly imo because every deal is a new deal and doesn't particularly relate to the other one.

Jesus is an absolute fucking steal & a magnificent piece of business, is why he's 27 mil.

The £130m or so has him breaking the world record by 50%. That's the kind of fee I would expect of the best striker in the world. Mbappe may have the potential to hit those heights, but he isn't there yet.

Maybe the clubs mentioned have decided that he's worth the risk that they pay the money and find out he's a one season wonder, or he's just very suited to Monaco's style, or he can't cut it outside Ligue 1, etc. I'd rather we use the cash to invest in less risky assets, who are also currently better players.

Well yes.. no way any club would pay 100£m+ based purely on potential.

Of course Mbappe has shown huge, huge talent to command such a price.

The thing is, he's only 18 years old - he's bound to improve (probably) and he might improve a lot.

Mbappe has explosive pace and is clinical in front of goal - can he match or exceed Henry? Maybe. And this is why he commands such a huge price.

If we could sign Mbappe we'd be crazy not to do so - but, as I've posted above, I think he'll stay at Monaco the upcoming season to give him the best chance of starting in the French national squad for the World Cup - and then he'll move on, probably to RM.

That's the (100) million dollar question isn't it? It's a crazy fee for an 18 year old and I understand the points you make about wanting proven quality for that fee. The only point I want to make is that the 'gambling on potential' narrative feels wrong because every top club is jumping through the roof trying to smash the record trying to buy this kid. It's not ...well Real Madrid will do it, so that means we should get in too! It's more like every clubs scouts are begging the club to buy this youngster at any cost. That's enough for me to say aright, we have to go all-in for this kid.

I recon Utd want to pay stupid money for players.

The only reason they became dominant in the PL was by pushing up transfer fees & wages to a point the others couldn't compete. The less competition, the more chance of playing Champs Lg, hence more money.

They did it with Martial & Pogba so no surprise imo if they try to do it with Mappe. Even if they only do it with only one player per season, it puts all our tranfer deals up in price & eventually they become one of the only players left at the table & therefore guaranteed success.

I think we may have to accept that 100 mil plus may become the going rate for players like Mbappe, if not him, the next one.

100 million is not crazy if he goes on to be come the next Henry/Ronaldo.

Couldn't agree more Jazzman, although it does seem crazy to some people. Am I alone in thinking any move he might make won't have much impact on him starting the WC? Obviously monoco probably maximizes the chances thkugh.

It is absutely crazy & obscene but it's unfortunately becoming normal, which is why we need to start putting more effort into actually producing City players from our academy.
Yeah I wish we would learn to be able to introduce young players to the first team in the way Real Madrid seems to be able to do.
