I think you can only play hardball if you're a selling club who has a player on a long term contract. We certainly couldn't play hardball with potential signings as you're trying to entice them to make the move.

And how can we stop him going away?
We can't force them to sign on the dotted line, the player held all the power in this deal.
What were we to do tell him to sign or the deals off?

In the end the guy has gone for more than double what we were offering to pay him, we will move on and will gt someone else to replace him.

No mate.....wasnt a big fan of Alves so from that standpoint, I'm not overly disappointed! Finding fault with the process the club took in negotiations is different from flapping! We use the same format, every year with our transfers. It's predictable and frustrating and I just feel on this occasion it cost us!

Same format used with Bernardo Silva and Ederson ?....you come across as quite childish.
