NYC, Melbourne and Girona fans

I live in the states and really couldn't have cared less about MLS until I became a MCFC fan. When I found out CFG was "sponsoring" an MLS team is when I started to get interested in NYFC. Not a die-hard but happy to help you out with anything.

nyCfc :-)

Happy to give you my take in things from Melbourne.

Anything to distract as we still have 7 weeks before our season kicks off.

I've nosed around a year or so ago on the NYCFC forum and they didn't seem too happy. It appears most are rags, red dippers, and tarquins that have made NYCFC their local club. Really didn't see too much positive about us even though without Sheik Mansour and CFG their local club wouldn't exist.

Attitudes may have changed but I wouldn't know.

The NYCFC fans seem to hate us for some reasons. Mind you NY people are pretty much universally loathed so no bother. Pigeons is a very apt name for them.

Some attitudes have changed since NYCFC was created in 2013 but a lot of fans absolutely hate City. They think they can disassociate the City influence which is ironic because without City & CFG, there would be no NYCFC as they know & love it. It's a bit weird really. I have a picture on my phone of a few "New York Reds", all decked out in their AON/AIG kits while holding up NY IS BLUE scarves. Strange breed. I've gotten into it with quite a few of them in the recent past. Nowadays I just leave them alone. Not worth it trying to educate them.

These guys should've been Red Bulls fans but they're not well off enough to live in the suburbs. Yank Rags NYC USA. Fucks sake.

They were only drawn into supporting because of Lamps, Villa and now Pirlo

I went to a NYCFC game and it was all pro city. There was no animosity at all. The complete opposite in fact. Loads came over to have a chat with me. They were all very welcoming.

I'd be surprised if NYCFC fans actually have any real negative feelings towards MCFC at this point.

For starters, they've been doing really well the past season and a half. For a team still in its infancy it's already established itself as one of the country'stop sides. Not as good as the best, but good enough to make the playoffs comfortably enough, which is a big deal out there I believe. They play some of the best football, and arguably have the best attacker in the league in Villa. Plus anyone who doesn't like the Red Bulls has a team worth cheering for. Now as far as I remember people tend not to complain when things are going well like that.

But also, the MCFC influence on their team is much less prevalent than originally. We aren't sending them players like we used to, we aren't messing around like we did with Lampard and as far I'm concerned Vieira is their guy, not ours. Outside the fact they're ran in a similar fashion to us, as all CFG teams are, they are an independent side. And we at MCFC treat them as such.

I imagine the only people who dislike MCFC at this point, are those who've always held some disdain towards us (eg United fans).

Melbourne however, I'm more interested in hearing what they have to say. They aren't doing as well and I'd be keen to learn what's different there as to New York.

Pal, they HATED Frank Lampard when he first arrived. They hated City even more because they thought Frank and City did them dirty.

Frank had a very slow start. He was tired from a full season. I tried to tell to them to give him a chance he'd come good. All I got was fuck that guy, and City and FL fucked us over.

You know what? Frank did play well for them. You know what else? Sheik Mansour spent some of his money to start NYCFC. CFG didn't fuck those fans. They gave them a team to cheer for.

Btw, they aren't Red Bull fans (anymore) because they are hipsters. They wouldn't be caught dead in "dirty Jersey" for a football match or anything else.

I thought exactly the same mate, but I went on their forums before they'd even played a game and you wouldn't believe some of the shit they were coming out with. They were completely disassociating themselves from us, in fact, any talk of Manchester City was banned from being mentioned because it caused too many arguments.

There was actually one prick on there with a pumped up sense of self-importance because he was from New York saying New York would not be taking any advice on anything from a small city in the UK. This was before they'd even played a game.
It's why I do not give a shit about these clubs (as well as me thinking that the hierarchy took their eye off the ball with Manchester City's first team thus seeing us not be a title challenging team any more while they all concentrated on setting these clubs up). If they all got relegated or folded tomorrow I think I'd be happy.

They aren't "one of us"

Fuck 'em!

Can't comment on the Yanks and Melbourne but Girona fans are really grateful for the help we have given them and give a warm welcome to all Blues.

Good! But that's probably because they are already fans of their own club rather than being glory supporters of City's rivals from afar. Plus with them being European they will understand what football culture is about

I'm from New York and have been to a few NYCFC games. I wouldn't really consider myself a fan (but if I can help let me know). As for the the anti-city thing, I haven't noticed that much at all... whenever I've gone to games you always see a few walking around in City kits and such and I've always stopped and chatted. The MLS really is as bad as you've heard though.

I have season tickets for NYCFC, and have been to most of those games the past couple of years. I don't get that anti city vibe from being there. There are plenty of city jerseys in the crowd and I often will wear mine when I go. Of course some of the fans support other teams as well but that is bound to happen when you start a new team in a heavily populated area. A good friend of mine is a Liverpool supporter but we are both NYCFC fans and have tickets. I've never been on their forums but I wouldn't use that as a good barometer of how all of us feel.

Hi from Melbourne.
At first it was kind of 50/50, people didn't know what to expect, while some just saw it as the end of the club they had suffered with (even though short, an attachment had grown).
So of course we probably lost a few supporters, but not that many.
Generally I reckon most supporters realise the investments gone into the club and see it as a big step forward, so the general consensus would be that they are happy. It's always good to see salty remarks from the visitors (Tards/Scum/the other Melbourne team) and other clubs for the right reasons and not just because we are terrible like in the past.
There is some impatience from some supporters, who want everything to happen Now and Messi as our next marquee, but I think most see CFG has been great for our club and see they are taking a slowly slowly approach. I think it's taken these couple of years for CFG to suss out the A League and we have a much more ballanced squad and a new coach who would have to be someone special to be worse than our last one.
What else do you want to know?
