If a member of the media (in this case pundit Tony Cascarino) offers the totally unprovoked comment "this station and some papers have had it in for Pep and City. I have been asked to write such articles on several occasions but have resisted because of what we saw yesterday (Chelsea performance)", then there are only 2 possibilities:

Either, he is bullshi***ng, or he is actually telling the truth. If it is the latter then it is a clear indication that someone in the media is setting the agenda when it comes to reporting on City (and other teams for all we know - both positive and negative). If it is the former, then you have to ask why, and is it a personal thing, or did someone tell him to say it.

Did Cascarino genuinely say that? Is there any evidence anywhere, as it's something I would like to use in a long running argument with a couple of mates if there's proof he said it.

Thanks for the response. Will have a listen to the podcast more in depth tonight. What would interest me is if this is anway different to how other clubs are treated. For example there have been many people historically lined up to slate Arsene Wenger, do they all offer these articles and send them to the papers or, similar to Cascarino, is approached by the papers/editor to write a piece about lack of investment in the squad, not resigning etc. Thats always been my understanding of how things work.

Maybe the likes of Samuel, Winter may have more autonomy but Ive always thought the sports editor would say, City are having problems in defence/Pep is struggling lets interview an ex-player lets get him to comment on this and thats how people are approached.

It appears similar across every sphere. News is currently is dominated by North Korea, much less on Syria, although the issues are still as newsworthy etc etc. Probably in a few mths the health service will be the hot topic. In the Men there was even a story about that bird Rooney gave a lift home to losing her phone - a few weeks ago no one had even heard of her.

Within football our excellent performances are the hot topic but no doubt, if we start losing again, that will be forgotten and the narrative will change.

I'll have to listen again, because I don't think that's exactly what Cascarino said. I don't recall the line about newspapers having it in for Pep and City, but rather something like "this radio station (Talksport) and the papers have asked me to write articles about Pep, but I wouldn't do it because of what I knew about him (ie how good he was)". The obvious inference being that he (Cascarino) was asked to write articles with a negative slant.

He said "This station and show has been critical of Pep and others and I've been asked to write articles criticising him and I refused"

No he didn't. I went through this some pages ago - see page 390 and following.

That's right, and further, he said "about Guardiola and others" - it seems perfectly possible that a station commissions a five minute segment to target/praise a manager/club/player, as seems appropriate. At that point it becomes an opinion piece to provoke response.

Anyone who knows the basics of journalism knows how stations like Talk Sport work.

Let's say the main football story of the day is Mane's sending off. The presenters work in twos and will sit with the producer and agree that on today's show, one presenter will claim that Mane deserved to be sent off and should get a ban, the other will claim that no foul was committed and Liverpool were robbed. That stimulates "outraged" fans like you lot to ring and and argue with whatever point you don't like.

Clearly that's what Cascarino is referring to, not some agenda.

I agree.

That is how I heard it initially but happy to concede, as the mind can play tricks on you.

Based on my wider point Exeter do you think that would be not different to people quoting against Wenger/Moyes etc etc.

My understanding of papers Is that someone (sports editor) says city are struggling at the back/ wengers arsenal keep losing and showing no fight lets interview an ex-pro to comment on this. Is this bias? What do you think as although we do tend to disagree on this subject I know you will problvide a well reasoned counter opinion rather than your a rag etc.

Ashton - smarm, threw in that Otamendi's yellow "could have been red" (no evidence provided for this idiocy)
Wallace (Telegraph) - v complimentary
N Custis - complimentary
Rudd (Times) - good but not really been threatened at the back yet, then we'll see.

Rudd was most negative, ignoring Ashton, The others were fine.

Then they decided to spend 5+ minutes talking about outfits, which was bizarre.

Doesn't matter who we beat, someone will come up with an excuse. First we beat Liverpool because mane got sent off, then it's the champs league excuse for the Chelsea game.
