Accidentally formatted my SD memory card and unfortunately have deleted around 9000 photos from a once in a lifetime holiday. Some of the photos are extremely sentimental and feel sick at the thought of never seeing them again. Is there anything out there that I can use to get them back?

I have tried Recuva and PC Inspector but have had limited success.....most files are corrupted and although the programme could find the files, they couldn't display the images. Any help would be hugely appreciated. Cheers blues.

You could try unformat. But outside of taking it to a professional and paying a fortune I think you might struggle tbh.

I did something similar but on a smaller scale and I'd like to be able to say that as a Microsoft certified engineer I could get them back but I can't.

9000 photos? Was it an actual life-time holiday?
With all that button pressing I reckon you should've been more careful!
Weren't you there? Can't you use the magic of recollection? - I know some photos bring out a certain otherwise hidden emotion in people but it's mostly bullshit when think about it. Unless you were doing something historical on the holiday, I'd recommend mourning the loss.

A specialist company is the only real way but the more you mess with the more unlikely they can recover them. Just bare that in mind pal..... 9000 photos!

There exist software to recover data from formatted drives. The problem is that the drive's index is gone, whihc means all files will be in 1 map and withought extension. Youre lucky if it's all photos.

I see you already have a tool for recovering the files, great. The reason why they don't open is because thy have no extension which links to a program. but i presume that if you open a graphical program and load the files with it that it shoudl display the photo, try that first. You could use a batch program to add an extension to all files.

no need to pay experts if you have the software yourself.

We got married at Sandal St Lucia and they either lost the wedding video or the camera wasn't plugged in.
A get out of jail card if I ever saw one.

There are some great tools on Linux for this kind of thing. A few years ago I had to use it to recover some photos off an SD card that I had bought second hand some years earlier and it even managed to recover a lot of the photos of the previous owner...some of which I did not want to see...

Tricky part is being able to use a Linux distribution. However, you don't need to install one as an operating system; some run from CD/DVD, such as Knoppix. Just burn the Linux onto the disc and then boot from CD/DVD. It will have one or two file recover programmes, such as Ddrescue and Testdisk

Edit: There are tools available on Windows but often Linux programmes will dig much deeper.

You could try R-Studio. I use it from time to time and find it very good. There's a demo version you could try to see what it can find, before shelling out of the paid up version if you decide you need it. It's not cheap - around $50 I think, for the version that supports the FAT file system.

The interface is a bit cryptic, but in your case, simply click on the device/disk that is your SD Card and hit <scan>.

Tick all image formats you saved in - PNG, JPG, RAW, etc.

Browse to FOLDER that you want to save in. You select a FOLDER from the dialog.

Find files in folder you told it to recover in. There will be a lot.
