Accidentally formatted an SD card - how can I recover photo's?

Tick all image formats you saved in - PNG, JPG, RAW, etc.

Browse to FOLDER that you want to save in. You select a FOLDER from the dialog.

Find files in folder you told it to recover in. There will be a lot.

Formatting just changes some partition information on the hard disk - it doesn't permanently erase data.

Should the above solutions fail, keep searching. But whatever you do - absolutely do not write any data to your SD card.
 
If you are able to recover the photos, I highly recommend ditching the PC and buying a Mac and external hard drive (or alternatively using Time Machine through the cloud). You’ll never hear of any Mac user who has permanently lost photos (or any other file for that matter) unless he dropped his phone, camera, or GoPro off a cliff before he could transfer the data.

Surely you meant 9000 photos (!) from 10 years of vacations not one.
