I don't think that is how it works, the player pays their own release clause with money we give him, there is taxes to sort out and paperwork that is up to the standard of the tax man,it's a lot to get done
I don't think this is how Spanish release clauses work. My understanding is that typically if a buying club wanted to activate a clause they would deal directly with the selling club and the transfer would be structured as any other (how much up front, payments over x years, whatever) and the only difference would be that the fee was already agreed upon up front. In less common cases the selling club would put up a huge fight and would refuse to negotiate at all with the buyer, and only at that point would the buyer pay the player his clause directly, plus an extra amount to cover taxes on said payment, which would then allow for the player to buy himself out. The big change came in 2016 when the Spanish tax authorities decided that the second scenario no longer constituted income (and thus no tax), which removed the incentive for the selling club to not negotiate. Now almost all transfers involving release clauses are the first kind and we're not actually giving Laporte any money directly.

That said, I'm sure there's still a ton of paperwork and it actually takes some time regardless.

I’m somewhat surprised we didn’t challenge Liverpool for Van Dijk’s signature if it’s true we are willing to meet Laporte’s £57m release clause.

Aside from snippets on youtube, has anyone on here seen him play?
VVD did cost an extra £18m though, hardly pocket change even though both huge fees. But VVD wanted Liverpool and Laporte wanted City, I'm not going to complain.

He reminds me a lot of Stones. The first thing that always remember about him is that somebody once pointed out that he has an odd stride length when running. I don't know if that's even true but it's always the first thing that comes to mind. Giggs level of one footed makes him a bit predictable on the ball at time. Got a mistake in him though Otamendi type mistakes than Mangala type mistakes. Decent sized lad but doesn't use it properly, wouldn't fancy him against a big bruiser.

He's good though, reads counter attacks well, nice left foot, likes a tackle. Got the Boateng long ball and those little dinks when carrying the ball in him. He's more of a work in progress than what I'd call the finished product but he only needs the odd screw tightening. Pep will make him world class, don't worry. He obviously fancies him and there will be good reasons for that.
Thank you!

If the selling club is uncooperative than yes, the player has to pay the clause themselves in full up front. If the selling club doesn't mind, then you're right, the clubs just accept a transfer fee for the value.

I would not be surprised if Bilbao were in the uncooperative category, particularly as they need the cash up front if they're going to take Inigo Martinez from Sociedad to replace him.

Pep has been an admirer for a while.

I personally have limited knowledge on him, however he could be our pique.
Similar build, threat on corners but also can defend them. Good with his feet and a baller, everything pep wants.

Good age too!

Don't post that, because the Rags on the CAF will be laughing. ;-)

i’ve watched a video of him on utube. he’s two footed, times his tackles superbly and doesn’t go to ground when tackling as Ota tends to do. He looks a very good player to me. We need to get it done before the vultures start circling...

In 5 years time we will be claiming what a great player Laporte has been for us and a bargain @ £57m. The other payment Athletic Club want is £5m for training fees and compensation which is under FIFA guidelines. This is based on time a player has trained for a club/clubs between the ages of 12 and 21. Also because Laporte is breaking his contract compensation is due from the new club. The training/ compensation fee is due to be paid within 30days of the transfer. We can expect the wages to be around £120,000 a week.

We're signing Kermit??????

Does he track back?

I think he was more a Pellegrini signing
