Aymeric Laporte

By the way what ever happened to the vengeful wrath of Txiki and never forgiving Laporte? I'm genuinely curious after everything I've read over the last year.

Was it even a real thing or has it been a major change of heart? I mean there was a Sam Lee article on why we pulled out on Sanchez from a couple weeks ago referred to the Laporte snub and our subsequent response and he's in the loop!?

ps If it's already been answered just point me in the right direction thanks.
Txiki realised Guardiola was actually serious about signing Johnny Fucking Evans and relented, saying he'd go back for Laporte rather than sullying his reputation by signing that useless heap of shite.

Not sure most City fans could give a fuck.

A non story in the first place i reckon,we would have understood a young kid with a broken leg staying loyal to his club who were getting him better,he got stage fright as well,i'm should pep would have understood, the fact we went back for him shows the notion to not be true
Thanks. I mean this was from the Sam Lee article 11 days ago. I don't believe he's got the most inside of information but he's not one to fabricate stuff. It just seems strange for the sudden and complete change of heart.

Sam Lee said:
That summer, City had agreed a transfer fee with Athletic Bilbao for Aymeric Laporte. Personal terms were agreed and contracts drawn up, but the France international called Begiristain at the last minute to tell him he had had a change of heart.

The former Barcelona director was livid, to the extent that it was decided that Laporte will not be considered as a transfer target again, despite the fact he fits the profile of what the Blues are looking for in a defender. City pursued several centre-backs last summer, a year down the line, but never Laporte. A source close to the City board told Goal at the time, "Txiki doesn't forgive."

Well he might have be narked at the time but we did go back so it's a mute point, move along
I'm extremely happy with this signing. However the way it's been reported that we were never ever going back for him considering we did is strange. I'm entitled to ask and I don't appreciate being told to move on and pretend it didn't happen. Thanks.

I wasn't meaning you it was a general comment i was making,we have gone back so why sam feels the need to say it i don't know but is clearly wrong

I'm just wondering if he's not wrong and the club decided that it just wasn't worth holding a grudge for a prodigal talent. He's not the only person to have said it; plenty on the forum have said it over the past year too. In fact I've heard it brought up plenty off the forum too.

I'm not looking for some secret anti-City angle btw in case anyone is concerned by my question haha!

I think the Sanchez transfer had a part to play in this....when he went to the rags, we had a large amount of funds, we didnt think we'd have and clearly wanted to target a CB that was good enough to start in our best 11. The release clause would have also had a big part to play as we didnt need to negotiate. I'm sure when his club set that release clause they didnt expect that top CB's would command upto 75mil, so we also getting good value for a player that has the potential to be one of the top CB's in Europe over the next few years....this is just good business...when value meets need there is no room for thinking about what happened in the past and I'm glad to say we went back in for him! Great signing!

It’s probably heaps more complicated than this but there must be an element of Pep giving up on Sanchez if he could upgrade to Laporte as his January CB signing.

Yeah, it seems a bit strange. Here's my interpretation of Txiki's 'change of heart', using Sam Lee's tweets as a guide. Correct me if I'm wrong.

As I assume Guardiola has set the goal to complement Stones and Otamendi by two CBs:
1) young, preferrably left-sided top talent to eventually replace Otamendi (let's call him CB No.3)
2) reliable experienced reserve CB for cups and rotation purposes (CB No.4).

Initially, the plan was to fill in No.4 vacancy in Jan (hence the interest in Evans), and deal with a much more complicated No.3 transfer next summer (Skriniar, Kimpembe, Upamecano, Umtiti were mentioned amongst potential candidates).

But after the Sanchez fiasco and realization that prices will soar up even higher in summer, during emergency Khaldoon/Pep/Soriano/Txiki meeting it was decided to work on key positions (CB No.3 + DM) immediately in Jan. Laporte is obviously No.3, and I'm not even sure he was the most desirable candidate - but the only one with release clause. It would be unrealistic to get the likes of Skriniar in winter window. That's how Txiki's 'change of heart' could be explained - he had no choice.

As for CB No.4: IMO City's summer bid for Evans is still possible. Another option is Komps solving his health problems to some extent and performing this role next season (perhaps sharing it with Adarabioyo, Latibeaudiere and Eric Garcia).

So, If I'm right, Txiki has sacrificed his pride (and, possibly, quality of a new CB) to avoid another summer transfer saga. Looking at the state of market, I think it was a right decision.

Has he signed for a United yet?
Can we swap him for VVD?

They didn't want him, and they don't need him.

It just appears to me that if any PL top 6 club wants to sign a player, its as if there is a £30m premium. VVD bought for about £12m, 18 months later £70m? Full backs £50m? Laporte, a young developing centre half, £60m. It's a joke, and where does it end?
