I agree entirely, as did all the hacks on Sunday, much to Neil Ashton's annoyance.
There were 2 attacking players (OZ and Diaz), Toure, 2 centre halves and a keeper. Not a chance that anyone would get on who was totally green. It's Neville being Neville.

And the irony in all of this is, if Guardiola's intention was to make a statement by doing this, then Neville has helped him achieve that aim by making such a song and dance about it

Ooh, good point! Very perspik... persipic... insightful.
I don't think Guardiola was trying to make a point about anything.

I'm not convinced he was either. I just think he prepared with 20 players, 3 dropped out late so he went with the 17 he had left.

Guardian Football Weekly summed it up pretty well (for a change) when they asked what was the experience that this extra youth player would have got? Sitting in a big coat on a bench? For some reason that is being considered more important than Diaz actually coming on and playing 20 crucial minutes

The hacks on Sunday - I think John Cross of the Mirror and Arsenal - said pretty much that, and that a U23 match would be better.
The mantra that he could have helped the kitman suggests that some are a bit out of touch with today's kids.

Exactly. I get that being around the first team squad is exciting and motivating and it's good experience for the kids, but to just be a token sub making up the numbers isn't going to do that anywhere near as much as training with them or getting on the pitch in the league cup like Nmecha and Del-Bashiru did. A youth player "missing out" on sitting on the bench for the sake of sitting on the bench is a complete non-story

Neville being Neville - apparently he thinks its disrespectful to the premier league - maybe he needs reminding that he played for a club who chose to chase money rather than play in the F.A, Cup

I'll quote this from the Times article

Under previous FA leadership, the argument has always been that under Fifa’s rules you cannot deal with a yellow-card offence retrospectively using video evidence.

So it doesn't seem to be a definitive rule. Also, it's the IFAB that set overall football rules so FIFA may actually be acting en virus if they blocked something like this. The reason I asked about this is I know that FIFA weren't happy about the Irish League bringing in the 'triple strike' rule whereby referees could no longer award a red card and a penalty if there was a genuine attempt to win the ball fairly and the FAI stood their ground forcing FIFA to back down as it would have been outside their remit. It's been widely adopted now as well.
IFAB decide the laws of the game - FIFA make the disciplinary rules (e.g. the punishment for red cards for different offences). I'm not sure FIFA backed down over the triple strike - they just got IFAB to change the law, as most FIFA members thought it made sense.

Ironic how Alan Swann complains about Guardiola getting involved in "matters that are nothing to do with him". Why is a Peterborough Telegraph reporter casting judgement on Pep Guardiola? Shouldn't he stick to talking about Peterborough United?
It’s just an ‘opinion’ piece, to which he is perfectly entitled. I wonder what people would have been calling him when he wrote: “Too many Premier League games are extended ‘attack v defence’ training sessions these days as coaches of clubs like Huddersfield lack ambition. Well done Raheem Sterling for making sure Huddersfield’s entertainment-killing, style-free approach wasn’t rewarded last weekend enabling this gloriously gifted Manchester City side to march on at the top”. He’d have been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and people would have been wishing he worked for the nationals!
He writes for a paper with a lower league team fan base to interest. He can only do that by garnering ‘clicks’ and this is a good way to do. For good measure he rants at, in no particular order: Sanchez for being a mercenary, VAR is a necessary evil but, only two weeks later, it is farcical and will end football as we know it. (Presumably it will never get into leagues 1 and 2)? He laughs at Liverpool, whilst congratulating Southampton, on the £75M for a bang average defender. He thinks Pep was mad to get rid of Hart (plenty of supporters on here).
He also says: “I see the usual suspects (useless pundits) were seduced by United’s demolition of a pathetic West Ham side last weekend, but believing manager Jose Mourinho will do anything apart from revert to boring type as a destroyer of the beautiful game when the heat is on is remarkably optimistic.”
He also argues that Rooney was massively over-hyped and never approached world class. As I stated at the start, he writes opinion pieces which only get noticed when they’re linked on sites like this, which is exactly what he wants to happen. People will be saying talksport is on a wind up mission to garner clicks and get people phoning in, next.......

He's getting more and more snide as the rags become less of a joke, letting his true colours shine. Carragher is so far beyond him now as an impartial pundit

very true, since he came back from spain with his arse handed to him he has been outspoken rag fan and not a commentator,he was distraught at the mane red card so we would go on to beat them and pull away further from the rags, his mask fell right off that day

Are you related to @franksinatra by any chance?

Birds of a feather.

The fact that Carragher was saying it was a red card but Neville wasn't was pretty fucking damning. Never consider it might be because he embarrassed himself at Valencia but you're right that might be why. I was just assuming that he was just like the average rag and was just getting mouthy at the first sign of it being safe to come out from under his rock

Quite a good rant that.

And he probably laughed his bollocks off, assuming he has any, with Shagger Giggs's shenanigans. Those who go on about respect are among the most disrespectful characters you wouldn't want to find on a No17 to Rochdale.
