Driverless Cars

You can't eliminate human error, even computers are capable of it, although this "sounds" like the pedestrian just stepped out without warning.

The problem is one of morals. Is it morally acceptable to allow the level of risk driver less cars carry?
Road traffic accidents are a fact of life, with a driver at the wheel there is someone to blame, without there is only the legislation.

Driverless cars, it will all end in tears. Strange how people are forced to ware protective clothing, safety glasses and hard hats when operating or near predictable machinery. Yet the general public are now expected to mix with the potential unpredictability of a one and a half ton moving car.

Sounds like a situation that could have happened even if it were driven by a normal driver?

The woman just stepped out into the road suddenly, so not only was she at fault for not watching traffic, but also she broke the law in America (jay-walking).

It's sad that she was killed, but something tells me that this happens more often than we think, not just in the U.S. but all over the world... the only difference this time is that we're being led to believe that this was caused by an autonomous vehicle, and that these driverless cars aren't as safe as we think.

I've only heard of 2 incidents so far with autonomous cars, one was when a normal driver ran a red light and T-boned a driverless car at a cross junction, and the other is now with a woman stepping out into the road without any regards to oncoming traffic. So my deduction is that this proves the real threat on the roads is us, not driverless cars.

Driverless cars will probably be safer in the long run but to make sure, collateral damage like this will have to be paid for with huge fines and compensation to the injured and families of the deceased.
The companies that develop and use this AI software have to be fully motivated to make sure the software is as good as it can possibly be.

There was also the driverless car that went straight through a red light and under a truck flatbed taking the roof off the car. The safety driver was lucky to avoid serious injury.
