To be honest the price is too much for me but we’re buying a player in his prime. He’s the same as age our Kev and we can’t just buy 19 year olds all the time. To challenge for the CL we do need a more senior but not old players.

Record signing? not for me, thats too much
What's record signing got to do with it? the market is rising all the time. We can only compare his price to what other players go for this summer. This time next year I'm sure he'll look good value.

To be fair, if you look at our squad would you assume Laporte is our record signing?

Half of Coutinho's fee for an actual PL winner and former POTY isn't that bad.

Pep always said that he likes the players who win 1vs1 to break lines and create spaces. I mean you need a player like Sané who is always attached to the line but on the right side. Bernardo is very technical but usually goes downtown. Sterling did very well at the beginning of the season but then not so much anymore. I think Mahrez would be a great signing.

I think this isn't the correct way to reason about it.

VVD went for 75m because Barca injected Liverpool with Countinho money.
Coutinho & Dembele went ~250m to Barca because PSG injected Barca with Neymar money.

I struggle to see how the market should suddenly change for everybody else as well given that you won't see a PSG type acquisition of star players every year to feed ever higher selling rates of players.

In the last one year, the price paid by a club is no way a measure of the value of that player to everybody. Those ridiculous high prices were only because it was publicly known that a few clubs (Barca, Liverpool) had got a shit ton of cash and hence sellers could set arbitrarily higher than usual rates to get more money out of them. And so, I don't think we can say Mahrez is a bargain just because he came for half the money Countinho went for.

In other words, let's not get high-balled by Countinho's price and then erroneously conclude that Mahrez is a good deal. I don't really think Countinho's selling rate should have been applicable in our case to begin with.

Why the fuck do people make buying comparisons against other players.
Its pointless.
What one mans shit is another mans gold.
I have no doubt that we have signed gold when it happens. Its immaterial what others are worth. Its the valuation between both parties thats important and what we are prepared to pay.
In Txiki and Pep I trust.

Finally someone who understands how these things should work :)

I expect this to be around Laporte fees + heavy add ons.If we pay those add Ons then we would have done extremely well in our next seaosns and player too would have done absolutely good work.
As for Fees,A PL club selling to a PL club esp to City would have been a costly affair.

And we didn't pay over the odds for Sanchez and pulled out and probably one of the reason why we pulled out of Fred deal too.
Club would sign him only if he was worth that amount so may be club values him highly
