Swansea is exactly the sameSpoke to a fairly senior copper in Cardiff about a year ago; he told me that deaths by drowning by pissed up revellers in the River Taff were far from rare. Rivers are different from canals, though. Much more treacherous.

He was telling me that some of them don't even fall in, but get in voluntarily. Whilst it has a comic undertone, it's utterly tragic for the families, accentuated by it being utterly avoidable and the ages of the deceased.
