The Boxing thread

Terrible news to hear the sad news about Brendan Ingle he done a brillinat job in the gym in Sheffield. 5 world champions in Johnny Nelson , Prince Nas , Clinton Woods , Junior Witter and Kel Brook all training in his gym he set up along with Herol Bomer Graham too he was so unlucky not to a world champion too. Its a shame to see people like Brendan go as he gave his life to boxing and the people of Sheffield. The Ingle style of fighting was always flashy and was brilliant to watch. RIP Brendan.

crazy stuff over here yesterday at 1 of the gyms run by Katie Taylors dad he got shot with another 2 people taking the life of a 50 year old man. I dont know what it is over here and going into anything to do with boxing. You cant go to a fight without there being a lot of tension about around Dublin. I cant even remember the last big big fight night down south and a lot of the fighters are banned from fighting down south if they are with MTK Global due to links with a criminal gang here. Its a shame as Ireland have some really talented fighters some on the verge of winning world titles yet we wont see many in action in Ireland sadly due to this.

A lot of the boxers in Southern Ireland from the ‘traveller’ community?

What are the main boxing towns in Ireland outside of Belfast and Dublin?

Really enjoyed that card last night some good match ups. Didnt pay too much attention to the Cash fight first up but watched all the others.

Yelusinov - Clearly a talent but only his second fight and still boxes like an amateur, hopefully gets some proper fights soon so we see the best of him last night was pretty dull.
Cheeseman - Love watching him fight hes so entertaining and loves a scrap, Fowler, Fitzgerald all good fights for him.
Doyle/Belloti - Great win for local lad (Gorton I think?) Doyle last night although it was a piss poor stoppage though ref should have given Belloti a count. I dont rate Jimmy Mac as a trainer got to be honest.
Okolie - Wasnt sold on the lad a few fights ago but two great wins on the spin and a bit of a statement stoppage last night. Problem is outside of the elite Usyk/Breidis/Gassiev/Dorticos etc there isnt many fights for him. Matty Askin next but then he would have to move up a few levels and go in with Arslan and Wlodryzk(Not sure how to spell it)

Flanagan fights Maurice Hooker on the Fury card sat night. Don't see a problem for Terry moving up too 140. Dillian Whyte fights Joseph Parker July 28th, my dollars on a DW late stoppage.

terry flanagan will be ok going up the weight and he looks a million dollars and i think the best fight on the full card and the tyson fight is a no contest and its going to be a joke and easy for tyson. i don't understand why its on the same night as terry flanagan world title fight with tyson knowing its just a showcase fight

Was watching the boxing last night (the Okolie/Watkins bout) and after it, they showed the Hatton/Tszyu fight from 2005, and Jim Watt was co-commentating. And it struck me (struck; boxing; geddit?) that I haven't heard from him in a long time. Has he hung up his mic or what?

Keep up at the back (as somebody likes to say) he retired in 2016 mate

Can't see TF beating Mikey Garcia or Crawford at 140 but no shame it that. I think Crawford will move up to 147 soon, he fights Jeff Horn in Vegas on sat night.
As for our boy, think he'll come out quick and not let Hooker settle, he's tall with long arms and from what i've seen likes to sit behind the jab. Flanagan will rough him up in the old Ancoats way.

Great Boxer and commentator .
Retired in 2016 not long after his daughter died.
He also lost a son in 1995.
I loved his commentary the night Hatton beat Tszyu.

Shush. Go and pick on someone your own age.

Thanks for the civil reply. I'd heard about his losses, but I'd never heard anything about him retiring.

I didn't know that either until I googled your question, poor bugger, losing one child must be terrible but two is unthinkable.

There isnt too many being totally honest. Belfast is the hotbed being honest. Dublin dont have a fighter which is crazy to think. Also for the life of me i dont see Dublin having a top boxer for a long time. Its mad with McGregor its all MMA mad in Dublin.
So Bray would be home of world Champion Katie Talyor.
Donegal has a future World Champion in Jason Quigley this guy will win 1 in the next 2 years I think. Also some lads fighting in Australlia and will be fighting for World titles in TJ Doheny at Super Bamtamweight is fighting in Tokyo against Iwasa he is from Laois. Also a lad from Kildare Dennis Hogan might be fighting 1 of the Smiths i think Liam Smith.
Ireland are blessed with some talented fighters about. and the fighters are strong. Think we will be hearing about more and more fighters soon fighting for World titles from Ireland but not in Ireland sadly down south.

Also the trouble isnt traveller community it is sadly more to do with gang related issues as in the biggest gang related fueds. 1 of biggest crime gang bosses from Ireland was linked with Macklins gym. A few years back at a weigh in at a hotel 1 guy got murdered from a rival gang and its been like a domino effect. Ireland down south have gone on to ban fighters who have been signed up to the MTK Global formally Macklins Gym Marbella as 1 of gangs bosses was involved with Macklins Gym Marbella and the police over here seem to think they are still involved so no more fights down south for any fighter managed by MTK Global. Sadly it means for a boxing fan like myself seeing some of the better fighters fighting down here is a bit of a no go. Also MTK Global have banned there fighters from giving interviews with any of the Southern Ireland journalists due to them reporting the links of the crime lord to the Macklins Gym Marbella. You could really write a movie about this. Its so crazy. I just hope none of the fighters involved get caught up in this.
