Building a PC

I've built my last 4(for gaming), while upgrading parts here and there. Allways buy a good motherboard. The number of people that upgrade everything bar their motherboard because it still turns on is quite high. You'll just end up with a bottleneck. If you're going to be spending a lot on graphics, memory etc, you'll just be wasting your money if the motherboard is crap. Also get a good power supply(Corsair for example), it's the last thing you want to be saving money on, especially if like me you leave your pc on all day. Oh and you can never have too many fans, the more fans the better.

Thanks mate. Was going to go for a Corsair CX PSU but they have issues apparently with that series so I'm going for an EVGA 500 b1

Anyone ever done this? I'm looking at doing so and have got a fairly solid idea of the parts I want but just wondered if any blues that had already built one had any tips?

If you can look at the case you're going to purchase beforehand - that's a big plus - look at the construction, ease of access, cooling, sharp edges, etc.

I've built my own PCs for years. My current setup (built about 18 months ago) Intel i7 6700 overclocked, 32GB RAM, GTX980Ti graphics, 1Tb HDD, 2 x 480GB SSD. Full tower case with 6 fans & a watercooler for the processor.
There is some sound advice already - compatability, power supply capacity etc.
I used to use PC Pro A list information as they cover every aspect of price/requirements.
Tom's Hardware is a handy site with some excellent guides.

Decide what you are going to need the PC for and build around what you will be doing. No need to pay £1000 for a graphics card if you are just playing solitaire. If you are using it for videos etc then you will need more room so ensure you have a decent sized HDD. If it will become a regular hobby then make sure your case has enough room for extras and upgrades. Cooling is a must so ensure you have enough fans and airflow.

Perhaps so - just try to get a first hand view of the case you're going to purchase - or get a refund option if not satisfied. The case is a big deal. If it's cramped and has bad access to components it will suck assembling the thing - and on every upgrade, the process repeats. A good case though will be a joy and can be reused for the next PC you build.

Haha my laptop is not really that powerful tbh so it's something I've been looking at doing for a while, might get a nice motorized dish and hook it up with tvheadend haha

Actually a self built desktop is about twice the value for money as a readybuild. Our kid built one for me for around €700 about 6 or 7 years ago and it's still better than any readybuild under €2k

He got back to me to ask what was wrong with mine and he's in Amsterdam for the week but you seem to be getting good advice on here so I said I'd leave him alone.

No worries mate. Have bought my case now so I'm gonna have a look at it and familiarise myself with where everything is supposed to go before I buy all the parts :)

Oh yes bud i'm aware. Built a few myself over the years. My ignorance stems from the most needy components i would need on a self build would be a pipe holder and slipper rack possibly a why you went into a room reminder app :). As I have got older my usage probably an old 386 could muster enough juice

I have a 980ti great card, only cost me 250 at the time haha.
