goals/assists

When someone scores direct from a free kick - like Merlin last week - is someone credited with an assist? Similarly, an OG? (I don’t know the answer.)

If not, that would explain two of them.

we have scored 9 goals so far this season(1 was OG) but i noticed we have recorded only 6 assists (according to https://www.worldfootball.net/assists/eng-premier-league-2018-2019/)
did someone get the math wrong?

Only 3 of the 6 goals in the Huddersfield win had an assist. The own goal and, as mccity said, Aguero's 2nd and the Jesus goal where the last touch before the shot was from a Huddersfield player. Shame Mendy doesn't get an assist for either because he was heavily involved in both.

my mistake, premierleague.com and 5 assists.

Mistake in my post above - only 2 of the 6 goals against Huddersfield had assists. The 4 that didn't were Silva's free kick, the own goal, Aguero's 2nd off the keeper and Jesus goal when the last touch before he scored was a defender.

So 5 for the season so far is correct.

I thought Mendy was unlucky not to be credited with an assist for, I think it was Jesus's goal, I thought he got the last touch on the ball tas the tackle came in to direct it back to and it could easily be interpreted as deliberate in response to the tackle coming in. I think he should have 4 assists. I haven't looked at it in zoomed in really close but to me it looked like he helped the ball back to Aguero as the tackle came in, which should be an assist. Ronaldo was credited with an assist yesterday in Serie A for a similar touch and Sane as well last year in a similar circumstance when Sergio became our outright leading club goalscorer.

Penalties and Direct Free Kicks are unassisted, though some have argued in the past that the person who draws the foul should be credited it's never really gained traction in the official statistics. Similarly you don't officially get an assist for an own goal although you could probably mount an argument that in many cases a good in ball creates a goal and as such perhaps it should be. If the ball hits the post and ricohets out with a significant change in direction there's no assist, same if it comes back off the keeper with a significant change in direction. Also if a player disposseses an opposition player and scores directly, no assist.
