You are not wrong their pal this place is a shitholeLuton
Rochdale, but the jewel in Rochdale's crown is Littleborough!
Get on your bike up to Whittaker Hamlet Dave just off Blackstone Edge Old Road. Lovely up there and a great view of the lake. Nearly bought a house there but the Mrs thought it a bit too remote.
Divorce in a nutshell. New horizons. I headed south met the current Mrs had kids and came back to her home town. Having experienced the South Coast and the North York Moors I am afraid Middleton is 3rd on my list of places where I want to live. Oddly I still call it home in conversation though.
Whatever anyone says, once from Middleton always from Middleton.
My last ride was up Blackstone Edge New Road, turn left at the reservoir and with a couple of pedals it's all downhill to Mytholmroyd and then moreorless on the flat back to Littleborough! I just have to make sure I've got a fully charged battery!
It's good to see that the wonderful town of Radcliffe has improved and no longer appears in these threads. But saying that, how can a town that has leafy boulevards, friendly locals, wonderful scenery and interesting architecture ever appear in such a thread!
Done that in reverse many times. Cragg Vale, the longest hill in England at around 5.5 miles long without rest. Nice fast 50mph drag down into Littleborough afterwards when I had the balls and the sheep were behaving!

Ah Rochdale ... Fully expected it's inclusion. We moved here from Failsworth in 2000 (Newton Heath lad originally) Where we live, Marland Fold is a lovely place. Great neighbours (mostly), fields behind our house that go down to the River Roche and views across the valley. We get deer grazing and lots of wildlife, but can still see the town hall clock from it.
Five mins from Castleton train station into Manc. Ditto from M62/M60.
Whilst the town centre is utter gash for any kind of shopping, and I go into it only to the bank and get a haircut (Just Gents off Yawkshite St ... Barber Mike is a SC holding Blue from the Heath ... ) pub wise it is now a great little crawl. The Baum (should you wish you can see Ms Stansfield bladdered by 7pm on any given evening), The Flying Horse, and recent additions the Medicine Tap (in the old main post office) and the reopened and renovated Wellington are all excellent. As is Vicolo de Vino wine bar if with your laydee has great cocktails etc. (Live acoustic artists of a weekend too)
The old Empire has also recently been brought back to life, and most every weekend has live bands on, mainly tribute ones, but also originals. As does the Flying Horse.
However, yup, the rest of it is mostly shite, and we are looking to escape very shortly.
And there are a good few civil servants still laughing off their bollocks from when they dumped Middleton onto Rochdale. I was in WHS the other day and a book caught my eye - ROCHDALE -THE GOLDEN YEARS. It stopped when we ended up with Middleton 'n Heywood.
Knocking down the swimming baths and leaving a pile of rubble seems to have elevated its appeal somewhat. That and the North's biggest Lidl.It's good to see that the wonderful town of Radcliffe has improved and no longer appears in these threads. I reckon most inland Irish towns are pretty crap if we're being honest, architecturally ugly with a sense of lifelessness in them. Apart from Kilkenny, Cashel, Glasson and Adare off the top of my head.I've been living in Galway for nearly 2 years (Manchester for 20 odd before that), and Athlone was a bit of a shock once i'd got used to the little villages and rolling hills of the West. Almost as though someone picked up Northenden and plonked it in Ireland.
You can't actually name that many picturesque places in Ireland in fairness, most of it is dreary and dull. A consequence of being so poor for centuries.There's a similar thread on a forum over here;
