Why are all our fouls “tactical” or “cynical”, but everyone elses’ fouls are just... “fouls”?
I'm sure when the rags used to do it, it was "clever play".Why are all our fouls “tactical” or “cynical”, but everyone elses’ fouls are just... “fouls”?

Indeed! As others say elsewhere, just another straw-clutching exercise to try to undermine the great football we play. Listen, I’ve seen a lot of different great teams and players as well as the cloggers since My Old Man first took me to Maine Road in 1959 (to see the champions, the Wolves have City put four past them.. mind, they put six past us!.. and yes, younger readers, Wolves have been the champions!) In that time I’ve seen some real hard tackling hard men, as well as the cynical bar-stewards in various teams, including our own (and none harder than our own Mike Summerbee) But I have never, ever seen a more cynical performance, either live or on tv, than I witnessed when my brother-in-law (a Red) offered me a spare ticket to see United play Norwich at home in the 92-93 season. Norwich had led the table for quite some time and had a good attacking side, so I fancied seeing them. They played open football and matched United, who were chasing them that year (and eventually won their first title in ages) with Ruel Fox making it 2-2 just after half-time, Norwich threatening to take the points from there. During a break in play, Cantona went around every United player to have a word and within moments, United turned from a team trying to play football into one that kicked and went over the top in every tackle. Norwich’s stride/momentum was broken and they clung on for a draw in the end, much good it did them as the season ended. It was clear what went on, a ‘button had been pushed’ and United roughed Norwich up. There’s nothing new in all of this, teams have done it since the year dot. The United roughing up of Arsenal some years later was another example of their cynicism. City play sublime football and commit fouls on occasion. For the likes of Robson to say we’re the most cynical ever is nonsense. He should look up games like this one and see real cynicism (and potential leg-breakers) in action.Soft red twat.
