Media persecution of Raheem Sterling

The issue isn't whether Sterling should have hit it hard or tried his cheeky chip, personally I don't care how City players take penalties if they go in, and if they miss, how they miss doesn't really matter.

The issue is the media photo used to report a story where City won a penalty shoot out was of Raheem, the one City player to miss. In the context of the media coverage of him, and particularly given the events of the last week, this does look like a calculated attack. I would also imagine had his penalty gone in their would have still been an image of Raheem with some reference to him being 'flash or similar due to his cheeky chip, which could also have been used to reinforce the negative stereotype that has become the reporting standard of him (although this is hypothetical)

Given the claims of soul searching and need for self reflection that journalists (at least those on Sky - the debate Sunday supp etc) have espoused. The use of this photo in this context looks like the media has reverted to type, and is still happy to continue the racist attacks on Raheem.

Shame on this paper, it's journalists, and it's defenders including the usually suspects on here (I can only assume these are either trolls or racists or both)

For clarification the issue isn't the picture (for what it's worth I think the photographer should be applauded it's a good picture of the two emotions of a penalty miss) , it's the picture in the context of the game. Had we lost this picture would make sense, City lost, Raheem (a star player) missed a penalty trying to be cute. Fine.

But we won, no picture of Zinc smashing it in. Or a Leicester player missing with his head in his hands. No the picture is the one City player who missed which had no relevance to the result, and in the context of current events about racism, Raheem and media, is more than provocative and looks like two fingers up to Raheem and the debate about racism.

Some people do not see the racism that is extent in society or in football. The skin head, union jack waving, banana throwing type are what they see as racist, the other sort, the deliberate or unconscious racism that isn't as overt is missed. As Raheem tried to point out two young players buy their mum a home, one is being flash the other is kind (one is black one isnt). This kind of racism is everywhere, and I hate to say it we all probably to some extent do this, we should just try not to. We do the same about sexuality, and again we shouldn't.

If you don't see the racism in football, and my biggest disappointment in the debate is that this isn't raised. Think about this about 3.5% of the population Afro/Caribbean, about 4% are British Indian/Pakistan. Yet show me the Asian England footballer, or the asian premier league footballer. They are as common as openly gay footballers.

I don't see that at all because I believe that black and mixed race footballers in the premier league are OVER represented by your yardstick, should we just stick to percentages then and stick to the demographics of the nation as a whole?

Or that Raheem is newsworthy.

Of course he's newsworthy.

Perhaps you can help mate, show me an example of where this has been done before? A pic of a member of the winning side ( newsworthy players included) with his head in his hands as the headline illustration in the match report.

It wasn't as simple as that though.

The problem is,rightly or wrongly, that Raheem has a reputation for being a flash git,so when he denies that tag and accuses the media of being racist and out to get him.......then of course they are going to jump all over him when he comes a cropper by doing something that would support their claim.

I don't think there has been a similar scenario to call upon?

It very much is as simple as that.

There is a way these things are done, to step away from that for one particular player is persecution.
