Crystal Palace (H) Post Match Thread

There has been so much hindsight analysis on team selection suggesting Pep got it all wrong, Adrian Durham on Talksport calling it’arrogance’ Is just ridiculous! This is such a busy period and unfortunately Fernandinho can’t play every minute of every game over this period. KDB and Aguero are still not 100% fit so need to be managed, and the XI players put out yesterday should have had enough to get the three pts but it wasn’t to be.

There has been one or two indications in recent games that this kind of result may be on the cards and Palace are the kind of side where it wouldn’t surprise you if they were the ones to inflict it.

Every game over Christmas now takes on additional pressure, the Liverpool game at home is now massive.

If re regain the levels we’re capable of we should still finish top, but how we bounce back now is crucial.

Do you think Foden, a player who most definitely does not need resting, could have played in Gundogan's position yesterday, allowing Gundogan to drop into Fern's position, which he already has numerous times before?

100%.

Totally baffling how Pep would want 3 CD's on against Palace. If anything we needed more ball players to make sure we could pass through them at pace.
Morning Billy, hope you're well.
I'm pretty sure Pep has forgotten more about football than i know but Stones instead of KDB seemed plain daft to me.

Nail on head

Since the beginning of December we have played 7 matches already and will play another 5 by the time we have played Burton - twelve matches in four competitions in little over a calendar month. In that time we have been without the services of several key players through injury and others have been returning to fitness. Pep resisted the temptation to rush players back too soon. I presume, for instance, that most on here want KdB to play against Liverpool, and so they should remember the fuss made when he was injured late on against Fulham - and against Palace last Christmas. Otamendi has come in for criticism, the same Otamendi so widely praised last season. Some have actually discovered that most of our squad are sub standard! And the manager is not much better!

Well, Pep picked his team and we lost. It's disappointing but it happens - it's just not happened to us very often - and I still reckon the loss of 3 points to Palace will be seen as insignificant to the benefits of having a fresh squad this Christmas, New Year and for the rest of the season.

We start every game on fire and should score a hat full of goals then we go poor as the game goes on. I put this down to them thinking it’s so easy. Maybe arrogant is the wrong word. But the work rate & attitude seems to be very up and down. Too many great players are going missing
We went a goal in front and I was thinking that, even with the team line up, we would continue on to win the match.
A cry rang out, "Stand up for the Champions" etc.
It all went tits up from there....

I'm somewhere between these two viewpoints. I don't mind Pep rotating and what we produced in the opening half an hour was justification enough for his selection. But I think Gundogan behind Bernardo and Foden would have been preferable to Stones behind Gundogan and Bernardo.

We live and learn, though. Pep certainly won't do that again.

Look we know the quality Foden has and you can make a case for him playing in any starting XI, I trust Pep will manage him correctly not just for now but for long-term development, he has significant experience with talented young players.

Maybe Gundogan could have played as the holding midfielder, but pretty sure he wouldn’t have been popping up unmarked in the opposition area to open the scoring if he had.

Big day in the title race. There's still a long way to go but we simply have to beat Liverpool at home now to stop their momentum. We looked much more dangerous with De Bruyne on the pitch so let's hope he stays fit for the rest of the season.

The para I highlighted, he had spot on

In the highlighted text, resting Fern is a key consideration and a reason for the team selection including Stones in his position. That could have been mitigated by simply playing Foden.

One argument for the team selection is Pep wanting to see how Stones would fare, solely to know whether he could rely on him if Fern were to be injured for any length of time. However, I'd argue that this wasn't the game to explore that experiment, or at at least not from the beginning.

No, but Foden may have.

I think Pep was well aware of the dangers Palace represented on the break and wanted a player with better defensive capabilities in the holding midfield role rather than a ball player in that spot that Gundogan is. Seems a plausible and pragmatic approach that sadly didn’t work.

This only wasn’t the game to do it in because we lost!
