I’m not sure about Gundogan, he was jogging around occasionally last night. Their midfield picked the ball up and strolled past him like he wasn’t there. There’s no doubting he’s a quality player, but his inability to get about and break down attacks/get stuck in is a bit worrying.
KDB looked out of sorts. Maybe he was being asked to do something different??
There are VAR decisions/problems that UEFA should be embarrassed about, but won’t care or justify them. If there was open and clear reasoning behind it, fans would like it. But it’s cloaked in secrecy and potential bias. It needs to be more like rugby. Put it on a huge screen and let the ref see it. ONLY if HE wants to see it. Otherwise, just get on with the game like we used to.

I thought so too, having been booked it was a needless, stupid challenge to make.

I predicted at half time we'd get a red card, though I thought it would be for someone not already suspended for the 2nd leg.
I can think of a fair few players that would have been allowed several like that while on a yellow before even being warned.

Interesting to see Peps views on the decisions.

He says both were penalties.

I have to agree with him in the respect that Fernadinho did commit a foul and the decision was correct. The fact you see similar not given countless times is part of the reason VAR is needed.

The first one is more debatable. Firstly I think it should have been a penalty and the rules should be altered to clarify such in the event of a ball hitting an arm or hand when a shot is on target a penalty should be given. As the current rules stand it was in my view harsh and once again you will often see them not given. The yellow card for such a penalty is harsh in the extreme and of course leaves a player somewhat unjustly a mistake away from a red card as illustrated last night.

There would have been hell up if those penalties were not given in our favour certainly.

The VAR system needs improving and quickly no question because that last night was farcical and to the onlooker simply made the officials look stupid.

Peps remarks on us not being ready for the latter stages surely refer to the fact we are still prone to give poor goals away and the Fernandinho penalty was poor on his part, and the fact that we should have gone there last night and killed the tie off stone dead. As it happens whilst it would take a brave man to bet on Schalke progressing you cannot say the tie is quite done and dusted.

All in all it was not a great performance against a distinctly average side. Infact bordering on a poor performance. Of course what is encouraging is that to win leagues and cups you generally have to be able to summon up a win even when you have a stinker and City did that last night. Had that performance come against one of the main contenders you have to think could we have done the same and would we still be in the tie, perhaps those are along the lines of what Peps thoughts are on the current state of play.

Whatever the current pros & cons of Gundogan, KDB, DS, Bernardo Silva is currently better than all of them centrally & is plying out wide, when we have 2 world class wide players.

Historically, our match day threads in particular have been infested with rags pretending to be blues. There’s still a bit of that, I’m sure. You need to weight that a little into the balance.
I am certainly not a fucking Rag, but I was thrown off the WC thread for taking the piss, or as I called it, being fucking truthful about England’s overall performance. I was of course right. Anyway, I like being a wee bit oppressed, I’m Scottish. I won’t lose sleep, but the threads will lose my brilliant footballing mind. :)

Maybe mate but i get sick of all this 'agenda' stuff that is all over this forum the last few years.
Yes, the whole world is against us & hates us, what nonsense.
we take the piss out of Liverpool with their victim mentality ,but reading through bluemoon I fucking cringe sometimes, everything is a conspiracy

Having slept on it, I think the result papered over cracks in the performance but I'm hugely proud of the lads who were out there in the last few minutes. For us to go into the final stretches of the game 2-1 down (and reduced to ten men) but still come out with an away win showed something about the character of our squad right now, that we can wrestle back control of a game when the chips are down. I thought quite a lot of last night was concerning and reminiscent of performances against Crystal Palace and Leicester and Newcastle where we've been on top early on, lost our momentum, and drifted listlessly to the final whistle as the game was taken away from us. De Bruyne looked a yard off the pace all night, Silva continued this abject run of form he's been on since just before the turn of the year, and it seemed as though the players were uncertain about how to approach the game simply because of how patchy the grass was. Were we supposed to play our usual game or try to adapt to the environment? In the end we struggled to do either of those things. Schalke got wind of this pretty quickly after the first goal and we didn't seem to have any kind of response - I'm not sure we were threatened by them outside of the two penalties but we certainly didn't make their goalkeeper work either. The second half seemed to be quietly passing by with the ball never leaving the space between the halfway line and the edge of their box, with any of our forays into their area being thwarted quite effectively by a crowd of dark blue shirts. I was begging for Sané to make an entrance simply because he offered something different to our approach up to the point he eventually came on, but then he ended up scoring a brilliant free kick which, at that time, was the only way we could have broken through. So he made a difference, just not in the way I expected. And Leroy being out there meant Sterling could be on the right wing to pick the ball up and score the winner. So yeah, Leroy and Raheem dragged us through that and fair play to them. Here's hoping for a better display overall in the final!

they could of just copied rugbys take on var, it actually enhances the game

You would then have controversy as to whether the shot was on target ...

Schalke managed 0 shots on target from open play (The shot that turned into the penalty was blocked so it's not counted in the stats). We had 70% possession away from home. We won the game with 10 men.

That doesn't happen with players performing badly, or Pep getting things wrong. This was a 3-0 game interrupted by 2 penalties and a red card.

People seem desperate to find reasons why this was a bad game from us - X played out of position or Y wasn't good enough - but it was a great performance only made competitive by 2 bad decisions by the referees and 1 50/50.

Schalke need to win by 2 goals, win and score 4+ or win 3-2 and win the penalty shoot out to go through, so yes, we are probably through barring a disaster of Typical City poportions

KDB was very disappointing last night. His pocket was picked twice that led to both their goals and he just didnt have ihs normal drive and precision passing.
Though fit he clearly needs games to reach full efficiency and his rotation out of the side of late hasn't helped him in this respect at all.

Was very disappointed in De Bruyne, at times he looked like he just wasn't with the pace of the game and was strolling around. There was a moment where he lost the ball and just lightly jogged back which is not what we've come to expect from him.
Have no issues with either of the VAR decisions, if you apply the letter of the law then they're probably given and that's all you can do as a VAR, but the fact it didn't work at pitchside and it took so long needs urgently looking into IMO.
On the whole, to comeback from 2-1 down and with 10 men (brainless from Otamendi!) shows some metal, but we need to learn from it as we won't be allowed that luxury against a better side.

Looks like we posted pretty much the same thing at the same time :D

At 2-1 down most managers shut up shop and take their chances in the second leg. Not Pep. He has the strength of character and balls of steel to still go for the win. The man is a genius. So fuck VAR, fuck UEFA and thank our lucky stars we have this genius fighting for us. It will never get better than it is now

I'm happy with the win. But let's be honest,

We could play shit and still go through IMO. Schalke are garbage. We won't score our first and 3rd goal yesterday against any of the other CL teams still in the competition.
