The very best players have that extra something about them. They can turn matches on its head. They can win you a game out of no where, against the tide of momentum, with a piece of brilliance. Regularly. They pull off moves that leave you stunned and in awe of their skill. They put fear in the opposition, who feel relieved when they're not playing.

As good as Sterling and Bernardo are, how many fans can honestly say they have the above?. It's not a criticism, and it's not a flaw. They just don't have the talent Sane does. Nothing to get angry about or be ashamed of.

Unless you only view a game changer as someone who can bang one into the top corner from outside the box out of nowhere then I honestly don't get the point you're making. What if I told you de bruyne is a game changer because he can play a pass or a cross that opens up a team sitting deep and defending with men behind the ball and completely changes and wins a game. That is equally as much of a game changer as I believe you think sane has which is the ability to score wonder goals out of nothing due to his shooting ability.

That then brings me to sterling and I will only focus on him for now as I don't think a case needs to even be made for bernardo. Yes he might not have the ability to score the type of wonder strikes outside the box that sane can but that doesn't make him any less of a game changer. His Southampton late goal notwithstanding. sterling often changes games through his intelligent movement and awareness of space. It might not be as eye-catching but finding space and openings in those tight games where the team has struggled to create is equally as important as the ability to just hit one in from nowhere. That is what sterling specialises and is arguably better than anyone in the squad at. He's done that regularly in many tight games where the team has struggled and has got the winner often in such games.

That goal above which was the winner in the dying stages of the game is not any less of a game changer than if he had got the ball at the halfway line and dribbled past 6 players to score or curled one into the top corner from outside the box. Yes the return pass was nicely executed but that goal was mainly a result of his awareness of space and intelligent movement. That is just one but there are plenty others like newcastle away last season which also ended up being the winner in a tight game. It's as much a piece of brilliance in play as anything you can think of and sterling has been doing those kind of things consistently for the best part of 2 seasons that have changed and won the team games so this idea that he isn't a game changer is not only silly but has little to no basis. If you think a players ability to score a wonder strike out of nowhere is the reason as to why they are game changers or a judge of their talent then you need to broaden your understanding of the game.

A big response there bud. Would have been much simpler had you said "Stop talking bollocks" :)

Interesting comments from Pep in the Chelsea League Cup FInal press conference.

He speaks twice about Sane:

He says that he cannot yet play inside like Bernardo, David Silva, Mahrez because he doesn't have the spatial awareness. He later says that as a winger he is the best in the world.

I think Pep was talking here about the no.10 role rather than the striker because for me I think Leroy can develop into a striker or a forward like Salah or Suarez who is not an out and out winger but a player more associated with goal-scoring.

Yes he was

I actually think he meant striker aswel as inside often includes striker. A striker in peps system is more than just your typical out and out one who plays on the shoulder of the defence which sane could well do okay, but in this system he spends more time with his back to goal, coming deep to link up play and then creating and driving through the middle therefore you could argue spacial awareness becomes as important playing as a striker in it. Unless he is playing as 1 of 2 strikers where one comes deep then I would say that sane doesn't yet have that spacial awareness to play as a sole striker in the system. I believe Pep would rather use sterling, the 2 silvas or even de bruyne there if the 2 strikers were unavailable rather than him if it came to it.

You're bang on there, mate. Guardiola doesn't think in terms of number 10s, false 9s and all that bollocks. He wants attackers to be able to attack from every position. He usually likes to play with 3 attackers. If they don't get the whole picture, they stay out wide on the line until they do or they get sold. Look at the development of Sterling's game and then consider Sane's game. As if Guardiola thinks there's any sort of equivalence between Sane and Mahrez and the 2 Silvas. It's laughable. Here, Bernard/David/Riyad, just tear past that defender like he's running backwards and smash the ball in off the far post. Right Boss. Leroy, you just hold this ball up and wait for Bernard/David/Riyad to make a move and then slip it inside the full back. Err Pep. What? Are you sure? He wants Leroy Sane to stop being effective just from the wing. And to start being Leroy Sane through the middle as well.

The fact we have Sané, Sterling and Bernardo is fantastic, and all under 25 as well!

Bernardo has an incredible work ethic, he never stops running. His spatial awareness is David Silva-like. His first touch is the best I’ve ever seen. He’s dangerous all over the pitch. He’s still got a window of years to improve further. He’ll be some player by the time he’s 27.

Sterling has improved so much. I wasn’t keen on the idea of signing him originally and thought he looked really average in his first season under Pellegrini but his improvement year-on-year under Pep has been phenomenal. He’s got great awareness of exploiting space and he’s a goalscoring threat all the time. He’s still a bit raw in a few areas but if he keeps improving they’ll be ironed out and he’ll be some player by the time he’s 27.

Sané looks every bit that potential to be one of the top 1-3 players in the world. The way he runs with the ball, swerves his body and his skill level is exceptional. He’s got the awareness to spot a free man in the box like nothing else and always puts it in the right place. And he’s getting that top class outside the box and dead ball finishing that you see from Messi and CRonaldo. He’s going to be some player by the time he’s 27.

If Jesus can keep improving and get to the level of these three as well our front four is going to be fucking frightening in the next five years. It’s harder for him as he’s a #9 and you don’t really see #9s develop until their mid-20s. But he’s going the right way to be a really good player by the time he’s 27 as well.

When you think Ederson, Stones, Laporte, Mendy and these four as well as a slightly younger Foden are all under 25 and we still have good years from de Bruyne to come... fuck me, we really can keep singing “the best team in the land and all the world” with reality!

Absolutely spot on

Unlucky about the pen miss, however seemed quite ineffective when he came on. Apart from that last minute tracking back to disposssess Kante and then charging upfield, can't think of anything else

I wonder if something is going on behind the scenes with his contract. Could explain why Pep has dropped him recently, and his indifferent form (Schalke free kick aside).

Perhaps it's coz he prefers Bernardo. Funny enough, so do I.

Probably doesn’t deserve to start at the moment. He appears to be very lethargic sometimes and today seemed one of those days. However he can change a game at any time and I wouldn’t swap him for anyone
