Swansea (QF) Post Match thread

Talking of VAR , why the hell isnt the clock stopped when it goes to VAR.... it’s a joke they keep the clock running! That’s another thing that refs can manipulate if they want too.....
 
We got the luck we needed to win the game. To keep fighting in all competitions will rely on some luck. We have had decisions go against us this season and we would have been happy for VAR to be used, which would have possibly cost us the game.

The big bit of luck we need now is for Spurs' new stadium to fail its safety test so we have to play at Wembley. That suits us a lot better as it isn't really a home game for them. Anyone able to sabotage it?!

Delph has done this practically every time he’s been on the pitch this season. “One rusty display”?? If we didn’t take him off we’d be out of the FA Cup, he has that much of an influence on the team.

The second bit is true, the first isn't.
It is not 1973. No longer is getting to the ball with a tackle enough to NOT give a foul. According to referee guidence notes and videos, the tackle has to disposess a player. If the the player is not dispossed and the tackle follow through subsequently brings down the player it is a foul and to disposses the player the attacker would have to change direction, pace or check stride to recover posession. If non of that is apparent it is a foul.

fairplay to Swansea for playing football rather than park the bus, although the comment Swansea played brilliant was exaggerated.

We didn't play that bad before the pen, Delph you clumsy fool ! Swansea scored a great second, but we still should not have gone in two down being the better of the two sides. You have to look at possession and passes and apart from the obvious and Swansea getting the ball in the net we where the better team.

thankfully you pepper the opposition penalty area enough and you get a goal, or three ! We where the better team again in the second half but fairplay to Swansea who played better footy than a lot of PL teams.

Our penalty - easy to see how ref made his decision, it goes for and against ( just like the clear corner we should have had that came off the Swansea defender in the first half, but that was ok of course ! ). As for the ball coming off the keeper, its happened to us all.

Sergio offside - Offside annoys me in those situations, its a rule though. A winger beats the defender and whips in a perfect cross, the striker heads the ball in the net beating his defender and the keeper.... OFFSIDE by 18 inch.

We deserved the win.
 
My impressions:

City missed Fernandinho in this game. Swansea's counter-attacking was very effective.

Even at 2-0 down we were playing well going forward. As soon as Bernardo scored I felt we would win.

BT Sports coverage was almost hysterical and their analysis of the Sterling pen. poor. Yes, the defender plays the ball but he also takes Sterling out. Those are difficult calls to make. I am not sure what VAR would have said because there is a foul in there. It's not clear it would have been over-turned by VAR, and VAR is increasingly looking ridiculous...see the Wolves game.

Aguero's goal was offside but what a ball in and what a header. You can't be too critical of the officials because that is a marginal offside. Sometimes you get them sometimes you don't and it was outstanding football. I felt at that moment we were going to win anyway. It was only a question of when we would score.

Don't be too critical of Delph. This is what happens if you are out for a long time. I am sure Pep understands that.

We had a lot of players out against Swansea. I hope they make good recoveries.

Celina scored a brilliant goal and James pace was incredible but I agree we were so much the better side even at 2-0. It was extraordinary that they 2-0 up from two shots and some great attacking situations went begging. At 2-0 down I felt it was one of those days when everything goes wrong, but Bernardo was brilliant and when he scored that goal it was just a question of whether time would run out on us or not. Bernardo's skill for that goal was remarkable. A wondrous goal.

The first post I made and we were 2-0 down and I honestly thought we weren’t getting out of it. If you’re going to quote me, get it correct. I didn’t say ‘embarrassing’, I actually said ‘laughing stock’.

We were certainly shy of putting the chances away and believe if they had VAR, it would certainly have seen us out. Their penalty was fair enough, but the dive to go with it was ridiculous. We rarely get those. Their second was a great sweeping move similar to us. Bernardo was amazing yet again. Our penalty was one of those that had it been given against us, we would be furious, but we have had enough go against anyway. Our 3rd would have been ruled offside by VAR, it wouldn’t matter that the defender had his hands on Kuns neck, pushing him down.
All in all, this has to be one of the greatest FA cup escapes, even though we dominated possession, their 11 man white wall, did give us chances, but as usual, we squandered them, or we would have been out of sight.
Don’t fancy Wolves in the Semi, they look like they’re on a mission.

I'd just like to give credit to Graham Potter. Having seen his interview on the pitch immediately after the game last night, and having just seen part of his post match press conference, he conducted himself very well. His side was on the rough end of certainly one decision yesterday (still not sure one way or the other about the penalty), but he didn't bleat or whinge about us and said we deserved the win (which is true, but it was still nice of him to say it). I can think of a manager of another Welsh team who would have spontaneously combusted after that game.
 
Watched most of game on stream. Clearly we deserved to win but the eternal lesson for this great team is to take the early chances and do better from the great situations we create.
Now every game is a “final” and in CL especially the opposition can punish you.
One or two weaknesses exposed yesterday for me
Delph though still a player I rate (think those calling him shit are way out of order) can still make costly misjudgements
Gundogan though a technically gifted and intelligent player does not have the “get back and stop the opposition” mentality that even Leroy seems to be learning,
Mahrez needs to up his game big time

We are now in an a amazing position

I think we're being harsh on Mahrez here because he was no better or worse than Sane or Jesus, or Sterling when he came on.

I thought the defensive play for Celina's goal was lacking. They took it brilliantly but I think we were a bit complacent there and our players didn't track their runners.
