Speed limiters on cars

So it looks as though, from 2022 all new cars are going to have technology fitted so that it will become impossible to go over the speed limit.

On the surface, this seems like a great idea but I'm sure, like most drivers, there's been times when actually going over the limit has been the safer option. I'm thinking when overtaking and when joining from a slip road.

Also, it won't half make driving boring!

Edit - please move to Off Topic mods :)

If you're overtaking another car with a speed limiter though then in theory they won't be going above the speed limit either?

They will be making driver-less cars soon so don't really see the issue with this other than 2022 seems a little optimistic

Most cars won't have them for years so the majority of interaction in a limited car will be against unlimited vehicles. Nobody will be upgrading their cars as it will be too expensive and probably not possible.

However it appears that the driver can override the limiter to accelerate if they want. They'll get an audible signal to warn them, or the radio will play Morrissey until they slow down.

Surely that will just cause them to drive in to the nearest brick wall in the hope of killing themselves?

Dangerous this. Sometimes you have to accelerate your way out of trouble to safely get out of the way.
You still will, you'll be able to override it with the accelerator. Bit like cruise control now, then I presume it will go back to control. Also seems like instead of immediately breaking it will tell you first and allow the driver to slow down.
"However, the new system as it's currently envisaged will not force drivers to slow down. It is there to encourage them to do so, and to make them aware of what the limit is, but it can be overridden. Much like the cruise control in many current cars will hold a particular speed, or prevent you exceeding it, until you stamp on the accelerator."

I'm all for limiting cars to let's say 100mph but having to override a default everytime you want to do 35mph in a 30 zone (if that's what the proposal entails) sounds a bit of a ballache tbh. There are plenty of roads where the speed limit is inappropriate, often too low in low-populated suburban areas (30mph) or too high on winding country roads (50mph) so sometimes it's better for the individual to decide what's safe even if that means slightly exceeding the speed limit on occasion.

I reckon we won’t even own our own cars in the future.

The likes of Uber will be much cheaper and all driverless and will just turn up and drive you when you need them.

Yep. You'll be able to pay pennies to share or more for privacy/speed. A program will determine the best use of the fleet to do the minimum distance possible to fulfil all requests and reroute for new requests on the fly. Eventually personal insurance to drive cars will become prohibitively expensive as you'll actually be a much bigger danger on a road of mostly automated cars than the other way around.

Ah, understood, thanks.

Just nip to your local friendly mechanic and get him/her to whip out the thingy me booby and it’s all good. A world full of driving miss Daisy’s great.
