This Cesspit of a City

I’d always considered them old man pubs but Joseph Holts houses became a big favourite in my last stint in Manchester. On match day, you could have found me in The Buxton, The Halfway or The Grove further up the Ashton Old Road from City. Well brewed beer, TV and a real local vibe. It was good to see them holding firm whilst pubs closed everywhere else.

Can we have a thread focusing on the numerous great things that are happening in Manchester. It is by FAR the 2nd best city outside of London - which (again despite its faults it is a truly great / global centre)

I work in London and I hate the place, for all its faults Manchester is mike's better in every way....

I think it needs a really good scrub and clean and some plants and greenery. There are not many green spaces in the city and don’t get me started on Piccadilly square.

Controversial but I would like the city to be really bold and make a large parking rim around the outside of the city centre, full circle lots of spaces free or cheap with easy access in and out and for the centre of Manchester to be totally for pedestrians and cyclists between the hours of 8 and 7 with no vehicles ( other than designated places for busses and taxis to take people out to home or back to their car In the car parks) . If monorails could be included even better and bolder.

It would be a bold move and distinguish the city from the other regional cities.

If we are serious about air quality let’s be bold instead of just making it harder to get around, or using environmental arguments as a means of just making money like the congestion charges.

High Wycombe is indeed bad. Had to go there recently. I asked a colleague there why it was so bad in such a 'posh' county. It's not down to austerity (which is the biggest load of bollocks ever). He said most if not all are housed and are on benefits. It's their habits that swallow up their income.

Another thing thing boils my p1ss is food banks. There was and is a negligible need for these things. You create them, people then use them. I've if you know you can get free food you can buy your iPhone or 150 inch flat screen in the knowledge youre in clover for nappies and pasta at the food bank. Biggest smokescreen ever

There are plenty of properties in Manchester for the homeless. Even those who would not normally qualify due to previous arrears or ASB. Check out SIB project. It's a little under the radar but basically guarantees anyone in need a home. All anyone has to do is walk into the town hall or agree to engage with the council workers from homeless division who walks the streets at night. It's easy to say people are abandoned by the state etc without knowing anything about it. The real issue is mental health and where I think we should be stronger is in sectioning the ones who will not engage and arresting those who are begging. Sadly most people do not have an understanding of the problem and criticise the authorities when they are arrested.

My garden is bigger than most of those! It's a shame Pomona Island cannot be made into a large urban park but, with land being so lucrative, it'll never happen. However, Mayfield is going to have a lot of green space added to it, or at least that is the plan for now and it's an exciting project.

I am proud but there is a hell of a lot to do to get it to being great. We have nothing in terms of London or Paris to attract tourists, football and galleries excepted. MCC needs to look at a serious attraction, a massive Eiffel Tower in Piccadilly Gardens would do. :)

The council has no vision and cashes in on any scheme that will make it money, removing heritage on the way. I'd like to see the car park on Bloom Street bought and turned into another civic square with the beautiful Minshull Street court buildings as the backdrop. But it won't, they will allow another block of apartments to be built removing the view forever for a quick buck.

Pamona isn't in the city centre though, in fact if we are classing that as city centre I suppose you could add ardwick green to my original list as well as victoria mill and sand hills

Green spaces are fine but can we have back the rivers that were blue or red depending on which dyes were being used.
