Champions League 2019/20

I see ‘Greatcityfan’ joined on the 29th January 2019 and this was his first post.

Where has he been lurking for 5 months?

We have obviously got under his skin with our “Fourmidable” season and the fact that we prefer to win the Premier League.

He can have the extremely poorly named ‘Champions League’ every season if it means we keep winning the PL.

You city fans are truly deluded, Uefa is after you lol. You've conceded about 15 goals in 3 quarterfinal match-ups and you lot think it's Uefa that's conspiring to knock you out and not your useless defence. How can you keep conceding 4 to 5 goals in a UCL tie and expect to go through, when the competition is so intense that a failure to score or a silly mistake at the back rarely goes unpunished. Did Uefa also make Aguero miss his penalty, Lmao. You lot are the English psg, if it's to hammer the likes of Watford 200 nil you'll be very eager to do so, yet the moment you meet a semi decent team in Europe you turn into jelly. Funny all the cries on here about Uefa this Uefa that, yet none of you will admit that that for the last few seasons you've been given an easier path to the finals.

Take 16/17 Pep's 1st season, if you had beaten Monaco, you would have had dortmund and juventus, the only elite opponent you would have had to play on your way to the finals would have been juventus. Take 17/18, the only elite team you would've had to play on the way to the finals would've been liverpool, you would've played Basel, Liverpool, and Roma. Yet again in 18/19 Uefa still provides you lot with an easy route against Schalke, Spurs, and Ajax, and yet you couldn't even beat Spurs who are famous for being bottlers. The only time you lot managed to get to the semi's was when Uefa had to put you against the other bottling team from France (PSG), which was Uefa's way of giving a helping hand to the two famous chokers, that way one of you would definitely get to the semi's. Because if they had put you against even a semi elite team you would have been back in Manchester, home and dry.

Then I read some of you lot on here saying the domestic cups and the league are more important than the UCL, what a joke. You think players and clubs dream about winning the Carabao cup lol. Besides, League titles are a dime a dozen, there are many of them, but there is only one European cup. You're the champions of England so what, there are many domestic champions, Barca are champions of spain, PSG are champions of France, Bayern, Juventus, Ajax are all domestic champions too. But there is only one European cup, only one European champion. Ask young players about the titles they want to win and the first names on their lips will be the World cup and Champions league. Why ?, because these are the most prestigious titles, think of almost all the great players, from Pele, Di stefano, Maradona, Gerd Muller, Johann Cryuff, Zidane, Ronaldo R9, Cafu, Maldini, Messi, Cristiano etc. Each one of them has at least won one of these two titles. Everybody remembers Zidane's volley in the UCL finals, or R9's double in the 2002 world cup finals etc, these players won league titles in both inter Milan and Juventus respectively, but it was their performances in these two competitions that cemented them as legends. It is for this reason that your owners, and management (including Pep) care so much about the UCL, whether you like it or not the UCL is the most prestigious club title that any player or club could ever win.
Pity you don't support your local club.

Champions League
Qualifying First Round
  • Tre Penne 14:00 FC Santa Coloma

well in reality, that's the first joke of the competition right there isn't it.
all 17 clubs who stayed up in the Prem are better than those.

Why is it a joke? Those clubs are there by right as they won their domestic leagues, just as we did. You sound like you want it to be some elitist competition restricted to the "big" teams.

that's just dumb. they did qualify, yes. but not the point.
the inequality of the talent distribution was my point.
i still reckon 5th to 17th in the prem are better than those.

Of course it is a joke.....................................
What does the word CHAMPIONS mean? The team that finished FIRST in their respective leagues, not the runner up or lower.
Where did 'pool finish? Where did Utd finish?
If the competition was truly for Champions of the leagues those teams that finished lower down would NOT even be in the competition.

So some European leagues are a better standard than others, I'm not sure what you think can be done about that. Within a domestic league it would be possible to make the competition more equal but I don't see how you'd get around the fact that, say, the Kosovo League is never likely to rival the PL in terms of quality.

The current format of the competition attempts to get around that fact.

The present competition might be poorly named, but the notion that the standard in the pre-early 90’s format was better, and therefore somehow more difficult to win, and consequently more worthy an achievement, is utterly misconceived and wholly wrong, imo.

Look at the three teams Forest beat to get to the European Cup Semi-Final In 1980, for example.
