You really shouldn't bother unless you are willing to admit that all parties, all campaigns and all elections are targeted by social media to gain votes.

Do that and its a discussion as to whether we as a society should allow it or not.

Bemoan because you lost rather than won because of it and its just sour grapes im afraid.

It's not just about the use of social media and use of data though. The link between Arron Banks, Farage, Bannon, Trump, Wikileaks, Alex Jones and Russia is massively troubling. The UK, USA and much of Europe is falling victim to some kind of Russian funded far right coup and nobody seems to give a toss so long as they get Brexit in return.

I have just shown you why that is bollox. I wouldn't mind if I was a rabid remainer which I am not, I just don't think making scurrilous remarks helps any debate at all.

The culture of blame for this countries inadequacy is rather stupid, look inwards to find the real culprits of it.

As for 'blame' - well simply pointing out in whose interests the EU operates and who determines its policy is not blaming anybody. Germany and France are the dominant economic partners and directly influence the other Eurozone members' key domestic and foreign policies, in a federated state their control would be complete and if we remain that is our future as well.

As i said before very very clearly, there is a discussion to be had here about the use of social media by politicians and parties but im afraid you cant have the conversation where you want it banned for the opposition but not yourselves.

Im not supporting its use and would quite happily see it banned btw.

I want to see foreign influence banned for both sides of any vote. There is no suggestion there was significant foreign social media intervention for remain whereas there is loads of evidence that there was foreign influence in the leave campaign.

I must have imagined the POTUS being used by the official government remain campaign and the money Soros pumped into the campaign, a Hungarian Billionaire who funnily enough became famous as the man who broke the bank of England.

Like i have said, happy to see it banned but that applies to everyone.

I'm fully aware of how data is used in modern politics and I know all parties use programs and algorithms. Like I say though, it's pretty clear that Trump, Farage, Assange, Jones, Bannon, Banks etc funded by Russian money have wilfully spread lies and misinformation on an industrial scale and it's part of something much bigger than Brexit. Trump and Farage being happy to heap praise on somebody like Alex Jones is frankly ridiculous and i'm amazed anybody would be comfortable with the growing influence these people seem to have on a global scale (ironic considering these people constantly rail against "globalism").

By the way, I wasn't beaten at anything and I've never engaged in that kind of rhetoric because it's unhelpful and tiresome.

The government relied heavily on the Obama model i know that in targeting social media and before that in a campaign to attract younger voters to register and support.

He was also used to try and frighten the British electorate in to voting to remain as well you know.

Honestly mate ive had this conversation a thousand times on here over the last 3 years and like a dick ive fallen into the trap Vic laid earlier.

Hasn't the ROI government also said that they wouldn't want unification to take place as a result of a very slim majority in NI? They've seen the divisiveness created by a 52/48 vote and would want a much clearer majority in the north before proceeding. Given that the UK government are required to call a border poll if there's likely to be a majority in NI in favour of unification, no matter how small that majority, doesn't it create the situation whereby it could be Dublin that resists the border poll?

The other issue of course, is that we've seen the problems of a simple yes/no vote without agreeing future arrangements. Wouldn't it be sensible to have an extensive debate on how the north would be governed (ie the degree of devolvement) before proceeding with a poll?

We'd want a super majority (66%) tbf imo and we'd also need a transitory period with 2 regional governments in Dublin and Belfast.

But is it not like whack a mole - one dark agency disappears but another pops ups.

You can buy yourself a social media bot for circa £70 a month - i know people who have bot's working for them. I suspect if you are the bot operator the cost of operating one (or thousands) is peanuts. Same story with data - someone sold it to Cambridge Analytica - it will no doubt still be for sale.

What about foreign companies based here like Goldman Sachs who helped to fund the remain campaign?

If there can be no foreign intervention, no money, no-one is allowed to give their opinion without fear of being prosecuted for telling lies etc... We may as well just ban free speech.

I prefer to trust that when someone steps in the polling booth they should be able to vote however they please.

By the way, there are people on here who believe every word an economist says on Brexit. However, when it comes to their warnings on Jeremy Corbyn, it's all suddenly fake news.
