Today's shooting in America thread

Not an executive branch issue; it's a legislative branch issue. The President can preach all he wants, but when the House and Senate vote down or refuse to bring to the floor gun control initiatives like a strengthening and extension of the Assault Weapons ban (as Dianne Feinstein has tried to, repeatedly), there's not a ton the President can do.

Absence of leadership much less framing the discussions. No President on either side of the aisle has done much to abate gun violence so while it’s accurate that the legislative branch is largely responsible for laws they vote in corporate coalitions and that trickles down from the leadership (Or lack thereof) from the executive branch.

Bottom line, there is no real credible interest in changing laws for gun control since it betrays the constituency. You want real change, you have to modify the culture with respect to guns & violence

The violent energy and chaos required by America’s birth and unrestrained adolescent expansion is now trapped, frustrated, and collapsing in on itself. It is a terrible phase of life in which to be heavily armed.

I very much doubt it
I worked with a Swiss citizen last year. Every adult (or most) does national service and then is given a gun for life with ammo. He or she has to go somewhere each year with the gun and it is tested for efficiency and the ammunition is counted.
If you are short on ammo because you fucked around a bit and fired them, well you can expect to be in trouble

That maybe correct but it certainly doesn't include semi automatic rifles.
And that’s the thing, why do you need a small arsenal, everyone have a six shooter you don’t need a fucking semi automatic or huge shotgun, arguing with yanks on Facebook and they bring Middle East terrorism etc into the equation, they are nuts, but it’s their kids getting killed so hey ho we move on.

Ah yes, I remember now. Just last week a bunch of Middle East terrorists were brought to heal by a bloke with an assault rifle and saved a community. Didn't he?

Serious question, seeing as there are lots of people carrying guns has anyone actually ever stopped a mass shooting by shooting the assailant, other then the police?

I don't know the answer to that but the problem with it is what happens when the police turn up? If the "saviour" has prevented the mass shooting from starting then it's just homicide. If the "saviour" shoots after it's begun, then it's probably still a mass shooting and the police are likely to put down the first person they see with a weapon.

I don't think anyone has really thought this out properly.

Yes, imagine a black person is the saviour and shoots the victim and the dibble roll up and see the hero stood there with a gun in his hand.... Bye bye hero!

It's compulsory for every Swiss household to own a functioning gun. Guns per capita may not be higher but gun ownership % certainly is. Canada has similar levels of gun ownership as well and doesn't have the problems the US has. Rural Ireland has high levels of gun ownership and no gun violence problems.
