Today's shooting in America thread

I know a girl from Dayton, Ohio (through work) who has a concealed carry licence, and she regularly has a weapon on her. She's not allowed to take it into her place of work, so she just leaves it in her car. I just don't understand it.

Unless she is a taxi driver that seems pretty fucking unhelpful if attacked at work -this springs to mind - "I'm gonna fuck you up..........why would I know your mothers birthday ? " lol

As a woman, I don’t know what time she goes home, where she lives, what roads she travels, which neighborhoods she might travel through, etc...

In a society where guns are everywhere, it is seen as a reasonable defensive action to be a concealed carrier, especially in certain areas of the country.
Full disclosure: I have CCW license in IL and carry either a Glock 43 (6 round, easily concealed on person) or Glock 19 (15 round, not as easily concealed but far more effective, if needed. Perfect for car travel).

For context, there have been MORE MASS MURDERS THAN DAYS IN 2019 in the US, where mass murder is defined as a 4 or more people murdered in one incident.

There’s a difference between a shotgun and the kind of arsenals on display in some of the thread’s videos.

In Ireland you need permission from a land owner to shoot on his land to get a permit for a shotgun.

Canadians do a lot of, well... actual hunting and they’re not batshit crazy.

It really is hard to workout where America’s problems are, isn’t it?
I've had a gun license for the last 11 years, recently upgraded from shotgun to rifle. They're fairly easy to get. We still don't have their problems.

In an area where guns are widespread, I put far more trust in my dogs and my fists than my guns.

America is not a society I would like to live in.
Oh, I don’t know....there are plenty of places where gun culture is distant noise in the far background, and are beautiful places to live. Then, there are others where I wouldn’t want to live, either....just like in England, and most countries, I’d imagine.

Our dog is a Bichon Cocker white fur ball that weighs 20lbs, and in a country where weapons are the norms, you might not get close enough to use those fists of fury!

"It is seen as" is different than "it is."

Same as "it is seen as" cool to smoke cigarettes is different than "it is."
I’m trying not to use declarative language and creating sides.

I believe that when I’m traveling, I’m safer with a weapon, though I hope I never have to use it...EVER!

The girl from Dayton has a Glock 19. It's quite a chunky weapon. She's quite small in stature, and wears baggy clothes to conceal her gun. She also has an arsenal of other weapons including an AR-15 and .50 cal sniper rifle capable of taking out targets in excess of 1000m.

I dread to think how much she's spent on weapons and ammo.

Fair enough. Would you favor a gun license process that rivaled in time and money what it took you to get your private pilot's license? Would you favor ad hoc random inspections by police of your place of residence to ensure your gun paperwork was in order and your gun secure (same as random check points for drunk drivers at night)? Would you favor massive criminal and civil liability if your gun was used in a crime by someone else and you had not reported your gun missing when you reasonably should have? Would you support a significant tax (300-400% over sales tax) increase on gun and ammunition sales?

Thats quite a collection! The G19 is about $400-500, the AR-15 is about $1000-1500, the .50 cal...no idea. Depends on model and quality.

G19 shoots cheap 9mm, AR-15 is more expensive .223, while the .50cal is quite expensive ammo. Some people go to a ball game and spend $100+ on tickets, hot dogs and a beer or three, while others go to the range with their guns and enjoy putting holes in paper and anything else they can get their hands on at the range.

FWIW, the G19 is a very easy to handle weapon and comes with a number of replacement back straps to enable it to fit almost any hand. Shoots like a champ, even for a 130lb woman.

so true - in some societies a rape alarm or a mace cannister is seen as more than enough protection

whilst thats probably true the only bits I think are reasonable in a civilised society relate to match tickets beer and food - the rest is totally unreasonable

No, because the PPL requires a much wider range of skills and education of laws and aerodynamics than shooting a gun and the laws surrounding that.

Firstly, not the same thing at all.
Secondly, NO, and I believe the Constitution doesn’t either! What is this “gun paperwork” of which you speak? The receipt?! Haha! That said, I do believe it is reasonable to ask to see a person’s CCW Permit if they are carrying in public.

Would you favor massive criminal and civil liability if your gun was used in a crime by someone else and you had not reported your gun missing when you reasonably should have?
I believe in penalties for unsafe gun use, storage and non-reporting of loss. I don’t know what “massive” means to you.

Would you support a significant tax (300-400% over sales tax) increase on gun sales?
No. Why? Do you think that would stop crime? There are over 300 MILLION guns in the US and you can 3D print one!

And I expect most Brits to share your view. I’m not trying to change any minds, just provide some contextual information.

I can't remember what the .50 was but I seem to recall she said she'd paid about $4500, not including the scope, for which she paid $1000. She also had a number of other 'classic' handguns and hunting rifles (.22 rimfire and full bore). Basically someone not to mess with.
