Hmmm - keep up

It was one of SKY's political correspondents - Goodhall I think is name is.

Lewis Goodall is the guy I think you are referring to. He’s pretty good. Don’t always agree with him but often provides interesting analysis. His take from an hour ago...

‘Grant Shapps on Today: “Boris Johnson has made more progress in a few weeks” than has taken place for years. Just a reminder that *no* actual changes have occurred. The EU has said they will listen to UK ideas if they’re compatible with the WA. That’s it. They haven’t moved.’

E27 leaders have been courteous to Johnson and will listen to our proposals but we have to come up with something. No deal is not the lever to move them. Guaranteeing that you can a deal through Parliament will move them (and even then it can’t break their own redlines). Suspending Parliament just tells them Johnson doesn’t have the votes.

In part, yes.
Given its track record i wouldn't trust a tory government to uphold workers rights, have a fair benefits system, rein in big business and ride carte blanche over human rights.

As I have long believed some trust the EU more than the Tories to run things, it’s understandable but rather depressing if you think about it.

Why weird? It is clearly factual

And - re the 2nd point - just your opinion and you may prefer to have the EU acting as a nanny supervisor over the UK but the majority of us thankfully held a different view
Factual and weird. We show we've taken control of our borders by deciding not to have one.

And Maesteg would still not have got the money. I'm still not sure where all the EU money has gone that was filtered through the Regional Development Agencies that the Tories (and LibDems) were so quick to abolish.

USA and China are countries bob.

The eu is a political bloc of different countries - Cyprus? Given your definitions then I visited cyprus it did not feel like an economic superpower to be honest.

Or are you now at the stage where you see the EU as a nation in itself like China and the USA.
Cyprus is enjoying significant benefits from the largesse of the EU - funded by other countries like the UK

Been great - really helped increase the value of my assets there;-)

Hmmmmm

Why on earth would Brits in Spain be thinking that way?

I can understand having genuine concerns over change - but why would they think that could be the result?

I spend quite a bit of time in Cyprus - people are not expressing those concerns there and have in the main taken the actions offered by the Cypriot authorities to ensure they are secure.

Also, a point that seems strangely missed...….

There are about 1.3m Brits living across the EU

There are approaching 4m EU citizens living in the UK

Just why would the EU do detrimental things to the UK citizens - especially as they are generally all adding benefit to the countries they live in

Suspect Project Fear is alive and well and being mobilised

Because what was certain is no longer certain. What individual EU Govts do with non EU nationals is an internal matter so they no longer have protection under EU law. If a future Spanish Govt changes it’s mind on the status of non EU nationals then guarantees given no longer apply. By removing their rights and protections under EU law you placed them in a more vulnerable situation.

This is all self evident so I do not understand why you and others cannot grasp that when you remove peoples rights under law there are consequences.

The French, the Dutch were recently... there will be some watching with interest to see what happens to us

I have no evidence....

OK will I do have some evidence.

The polls in France are now showing a 60% backing of remaining in the EU, with >30% now siding with leaving and the rest unsure.

Before our referendum it was 51% who had a positive feeling towards the EU, 46% negative in Holland. Since our referendum again the figures have gone closer to remain.

When I wrote that I did think I had left myself open to comparisons with shit parts of China and the us. On reflection I would much prefer to live in Cyprus :)
I can seriously recommend it

Some great golf courses (not enough though) - great weather - I can even advise where to watch CITY

Certainly a big part of the more enjoyable aspects of my life

Are you actually fucking serious?

Is Ireland a special case? You don’t have people with odd ideas over there? Don’t read more into it that what was quoted. You have as many people playing the game as we do.

According to some we have up to 52% of people in our union that are barking mad. I think it’s stretch to suggest you think 100% of the Irish are very virtuous.

why do Leavers want the EU to collapse? to somehow justify their position? " see we told you" mentality?
I think that this is misrepresentation/fabrication

I genuinely cannot remember a single Leaver post wishing for that outcome - we would be badly affected

A lot of us expect it is inevitable - that is not 'wanting it' to happen

More snivelling nonsense from the Brexit Sec.

‘The car industry’s ‘just in time’ supply chains rely on fluid cross-Channel trade routes. >1,100 trucks filled with car parts cross seamlessly from EU into UK each day. We need to start talks now on how we make sure this flow continues if we leave without a deal.’

Really? No shit. Its what we voted for you absolute tit.
You mean he wants a deal if we have no deal?

That must go down with the NI Secretary who didn't know people in NI voted on sectarian grounds.

Why not?
I thought as a minimum her role was to question and advise.
We're told she can't go against what the PM recommends.
Whatabout 'in extremis' when she knows she is being lied to?
In the current situation - given all the traditions and sooo many years of precedents - she did the only thing that she could do and the only thing that her advisers would have set out as the option

Just simple facts - and echoed by the long-standing commentators on the constitution

I used to really like Ruth. A true Unionist and good person. Unfortunately she took on an impossible role and it has done for her career wise. The writing was on the wall when the timing of her starting a family was known. Good luck to her for her future. Her answers about the PM were honest but classically political. Of course she asked him if he was seriously trying for a deal and of course he said yes.

What was he supposed to say, ‘No Ruth, I’m going to fuck everyone over and take us out on a No deal’.

It means unionism is pretty much dead politically in Scotland as it has lost its one capable leader. Sad but inevitable given the schism between the Scottish party and the mainstream.
I agree with all that - but my post that you replied to was about QEII

We were talking about Liz R not Ruth D, but that notwithstanding the latter went out with a whimper citing family reasons (yeah right) rather than Johnson, prorogation,no deal Brexit etc.
Her leaving speech was a timid political one meant to cause no embarassment or damage to the Tory party.
She was a Tory first and a Unionist second.
Maybe as a newly devoted mother she simply spoke the truth - rather than what you hoped she would say?

Judge has refused to halt the shutting of parliament @bbc news

Hardly surprising. What Boris has done, whilst undemocratic and morally wrong, is totally legal.
