Thomas Cook

Guessing the 25k offer was over and above the statutory package? If so, he won't get it all but he'll get the statutory part, which on top of the redundancy pay also includes any unpaid wages, accrued holiday pay owing, and notice pay. Obviously TC aren't in a position to pay it so he'd have to claim it from the government via the Insolvency Service
Statutory Maximum is 15k for him, which is a lot more than i thought it would be.

Is it true the staff made redundant are set to receive food vouchers? I got fuck all when I was made redundant the missus was heavily pregnant and we had a mortgage to pay.

I think TC going under will have a knock on effect for the foreseeable future. Holidays and flights for next year are already considerably more expensive than they would have been if TC was still operating.

I think I'll be holidaying in New Brighton if the cost of holidays abroad get worse: /

Air Transat? Didn’t like them, it was a ‘dry’ flight and they confiscated my wine!
That’s them...Dry flight, stale sandwich and no duty free lol. At least they got us home. Remember when we were disembarking a cocky little Canadian air steward said to me “thank you for choosing Monarch”

This could be on a number of threads including this one:

The German Government stepped in to save Condor Air from Thomas Cooks collapse.

The Tories stood by and ruined 1.5 million peoples holidays and threw 9000 British people out of work.

Perhaps its time to stop blaming our European partners and sort out our own Government.

With reference to the treatment given out in the above story, has anyone on here been repatriated from Majorca on the Malaysian A380? If so how was the service/treatment? Just curious.

Bulls*it - why should my taxes cover $1.5billion of mismanaging from an incapable Board of directors. The buck stopped with Peter Fankhauser and he failed. TBH it was doomed about 7/8 years ago since the last bailout. I dont know the exact details of condor but it was prob much cheaper to save. EDIT detail in the article. (It was profitable)

Boris was right to walk away.

The Thomas Cook Group went bust and would of taken Condor with it but Condor was profitable alone so it made sense to bail it out.

I think the government could of stepped in to keep the airline going but it still would of resulted in massive job losses to the shops etc on the tour operator side.

They also should potentially of stepped in because of the competition issues this raises as for example Manchester has had a major % of its flying capacity wiped out. That means Virgin etc will take advantage of the decreased supply and raise prices.

Agreed - Not sure what stake TC held in terms of holiday packages in the UK but im sure their wont be many options for 2020...Virgin, TUI and then just regional airlines and online package companies of which any could fold at any time!

I would say that is how Germany looked at it. To keep a competitive market. Was justifiable in the UK. The market is very DIY these days with AirBNB and easy to use budget airlines. Rarely need that middle man now.

For Europe etc I think it will be okay as Jet2 and TUI etc do well and Easyjet/Ryanair keep prices down.

For transatlantic though this creates a massive problem. The US carriers are awful and one of them is in bed with Virgin (Delta) and there is no other competition.

Thomas Cook was a lot cheaper than Virgin but it didn't feel it which is why it's such a massive loss competition wise. I've done both over the last few years and Thomas Cook really was no different but it was £100-£200 each cheaper.

Now Virgin will just mop up and send people on even more expensive direct flights or send them on a cra**y expensive Delta plane to Atlanta first and then onwards.

Some of us don’t want taxpayer money squandered on propping up shit companies.

While I'd agree to an extent but there again taxpayers money is to be used to help the people of this country and 9000 of them have just been chucked out of work.

Best thing the Gov could do is 9000x $25k Redundancy packages@ $225m. Let 9000 be absorbed into other jobs. VS $1.5BILLION Debt of a failing going concern business that is too big to turn. Its easy Math.

Hopefully someone picks up the Brand for £1 and offers a small part of the business like the Sentido Hotels or transatlantic flights.
