Think Cleverely said ‘whatever the outcome it will have to be supported by all sides in NI’. Or words to that effect. Which kind of torpedoes Johnson’s opening bid for a deal since it doesn’t have the support of the nationalist community, Alliance voters nor even all Unionists. Only the DUP seem on board and that seems to be because they have been promised a veto on the default setting that no one else has.

It’s idiotic. Negotiating ‘in secret’ is partly why we are in this mess. Will these proposals pass Parliament? The rest of the Tory Party? Nationalist community in NI? Presenting proposals with no consensus or buy in from those who will have a major say in whether they will fly or not is gross incompetence mixed with arrogance and stupidity.

The take it or leave it is for the base. EU will probably view it as an opening bid and proceed to talk on that basis. Dublin will probably do the public rubbishing.

Or the EU just tell Johnson to fuck off :)

Reality is they will keep talking whilst figuring out how long an extension to offer.

Probably not. But if the EU know they won’t pass or even get presented they will also know there is little point in engaging on the substance of the proposals and can either dismiss them or treat them as an opening bid.

What is overlooked is Johnson has travelled some distance. His opening gambit was no talks until the backstop was ditched. It wasn’t but he went to Pais and Berlin anyway. Then we said we would take the May deal but we need movement on the backstop. He was told to come up with ideas. Now we have. Ok they may be garbage but if you’re the EU you look at the direction of travel and think it may prove useful to continue the ride.
