Strangely quiet this thread given the positive news?

Would have been numerous pages had the talks not gone well in my opinion.
I think its probably wise to hear the detail before running up the flag. Hopefully they will talk like grown ups and stop all the bloody leakage until its something that can be agreed.
I still feel it will be a version of the backstop but lets see. Wonder if parliament will like it?

It’s looking more positive with the language being said hopefully avoid no deal, making the EU look at what could happen if they let the clock to run down has hopefully banged everyone’s head together. Thought this had the potential to be done at the 11th hour fingers crossed.

There has been no 'making eu' do anything, nor scaring them with a no deal, but simply accepting what they have been saying all along and finally compromising, despite the public bravado otherwise.

This seems to be the mantra of extremists on both sides.
If there is even a hint of a deal being struck people will claim brilliant negotiating from the EU/government without hearing the facts.

deal or no deal matters not they will wind down in Washington...leaving the EU will be enough of a reason - PSA will be delighted to shut Ellesmere Port and move Astra construction to German Opel plants and BMW will use it as an excuse to move more and more MINI construction elsewhere. They have all been signposting this for about a year.

This may or may not be at the heart of it. As it relates only to NI EU could probably wear it. Maybe.

The only solution currently under discussion that could square the customs circle is a reduced version of Theresa May’s New Customs Partnership. This would see NI leave the EU customs union with the rest of the UK but it would be treated administratively as if it was part of it. The proposal has problems for both sides but it satisfies the most important concerns of each of them.@IrishTimes.

So basically, NI will leave the EU and stay in the UK but still apply all EU rules and regulations with a de facto EU border in the Irish sea. Well fucking done lads, that's what we asked for 3 fucking years ago. Bualadh bos.

RTE reporting same. On balance an easier sell for Dublin than London but enough of a messy compromise for both sides to claim something. NI is still in the U.K. customs territory but pretend it’s in the EU. Or vice versa :)

‘All sides are coy about what the new proposals contain, except that Varadkar and Johnson discussed customs, consent and post-Brexit bilateral relations, but if this can be done relatively quickly it must raise suspicions that it is in the realm of an off-the-shelf deal. In other words, something that brings us closer to the Joint Report and NI-only backstop; or perhaps something of the Customs Partnership idea, ie NI remains in the UK customs territory but it applies the EU's tariffs and customs rules.’ @RTE

Pretty much. Still a lot of work to get it done and no idea if it’s sellable in Brussels and London but I reckon Brussels will wear it for a deal especially if Dublin ok it. Can see why Leo was looking chirpy.

See.....deal will be agreed, each side will claim victory and that they got what they wanted and the world will move on.

Happy days ;-)
