I’ve seen it all too often on here and other places. Criticism of Israel quickly draws accusations of antisemitism. Some here expressed a view that although criticism of Israel is not itself antisemitic, it is often an indicator that someone is antisemitic. Such serious allegations shouldn’t be brandished so frivolously.

Sounds like you're telling Jews what should and should not constitute as anti-semitism.

  • Accusing Jews as a people of being responsible for real or imagined wrongdoing committed by a single Jewish person or group, or even for acts committed by non-Jews.
  • Calling for, aiding, or justifying the killing or harming of Jews in the name of a radical ideology or an extremist view of religion.
  • Accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel, or to the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide, than to the interests of their own nations.
  • Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor.
  • Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.
  • Holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel.
These are examples of anti-semitism defined by the IHRA. Hezbollah and Hamas have advocated these "points" many times in the past. Corbyn advocates and has given public support for both these groups. What's not to get.

I think most people take antisemitism to simply mean a hatred and prejudice towards Jews. The IHRA’s working definition (and some of their examples, in particular) fundamentally differ from that and is therefore extremely contentious amongst academics (including Jewish academics).

With regards to Hezbollah and Hamas, these groups exist principally because of Israel’s actions (past and present). Israel helped create Hamas and supported it as a counterweight to the PLO. Hezbollah is both political party and armed militia. It was founded to liberate parts of Lebanon that were occupied by Israel.

Under the common definition of terrorism, I accept that Hamas has almost certainly intentionally targeted civilians. The case against Hezbollah is much less clear. I remind you that the British government only designated Hezbollah a terrorist group this year, after considerable pressure and lobbying by Israel and the United States. Under the common definition, the United States and United Kingdom have themselves committed acts of terrorism, including two acts of nuclear terrorism for the former.

The British government has chosen to label both Hamas and Hezbollah as terrorist groups whilst maintaining close ties with Israel, which is responsible for such horrendous and numerous violations of human rights. Israel has killed orders of magnitude more civilians than both those groups combined. It is frankly reprehensible that the British government should hold such a cordial relationship with Israel given its own history and the actions of successive Israeli governments.
