This general whilst important and powerful wasn't their number 2 leader.

He was *at least* the second most powerful man in Iran. The argument could even have been made that he was the most influential. Khamenei almost always acted on his recommendation. He was the most powerful person in the IRGC, even more powerful than the IRGC chief. The IRGC is by far the most powerful entity/organisation in Iran. By most estimates, it controls over a third of the country’s economy and essentially all of its military power. There is no analogue for it in the West.

To give you an idea, you will find stories of Soleimani giving ultimatums to successive Iranian presidents. He was the single most important person in defeating IS and has for decades been a major thorn in America’s hegemonic ambitions for the Middle East. The New Yorker described him as the most powerful operative in the Middle East.

I have seen his murder being described as equal in significance to Iran assassinating the VP. The reality is that it’s much more significant than that. Aside from Cheney, the VP has historically wielded very little power or influence. It’s almost impossible to understate the significance of this murder and a forceful Iranian response is guaranteed. It’s not a question of whether Americans will die because of this incredibly foolish and reckless action, it’s a question of how many and their seniority/importance.

“After everything else we’ve done for them” said Hitler asking why the Jews were mad at him after his radically implemented weight loss programme.
I hope I'm wrong, but I think this whole thing is a genuine attempt at distraction from Trump's domestic 'issues'.

It appears to be another distraction in a line of many, only this time there are severe consequences and it just shows the lengths this guy will go to in order to save himself.

Would be enough to end any other Presidency. What other classified information is being spoken about to non security cleared personnel?

To be fair, that tweet was a response to US military arriving in Baghdad.

However, I don't doubt such information about air strikes etc are disclosed to him and he has to then act it out with marianettes to his Dad.

C/o The Hill:

BREAKING: Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer said President Trump did not alert the "Gang of Eight" – the top four leaders in Congress and the top four lawmakers on the Senate and House Intelligence committees – ahead of a strike that killed a top Iranian general.

Schumer added that the nation’s founding fathers gave Congress the authority to declare war to force the commander-in-chief to consult with lawmakers before making hasty military decisions.

- so maybe it wasn’t “a new one” to suggest Congress should have been in the loop.

Ive confirmed it can most certainly be seen both ways but as usual, sides have been taken and you are seemingly not on the side of our biggest ally.

You will have the usual company dont worry.

Do you think it’s right that we should automatically take the side of our “biggest ally” rather than have a more mature relationship where we can ask questions and hold them to account

“Brexit means Brexit” and “Build that wall!” - asking for accountability makes you a bleeding heart, remainer, Trump-hating, liberal these days.....

CNN are reporting that (I'm paraphrasing so may have misinterpreted) that lawyers for DoD and two other departments judged it was 'self defence' and did not need Congressional assent.
