Pep Guardiola - 2019/20 Performances

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking with BBC Match of the Day: “If I would find the solution I would try to work on that. It would be a mistake not to let them [the City players] feel incredible and fantastic after that game, football is sometimes like this.

“I have no regrets about the performance. We lost a football match. Football is about how many goals you score and how many you concede. Of course we had a lot of chances. At the end of the day you have to take it."

On the decision to let Ilkay Gundogan, not Sergio Aguero, take the penalty: “They decide."

Did it affect the way they played after that?: "No. If we score it would be better, maybe but in the second half we started well and created chances to score and didn’t do that. Until Oleksandr Zinchenko was sent off, the rest was OK.”

I hope they feel incredible and fantastic after that.

Until the sending off all that was missing was a goal,he doesn't mean they should great about the whole 90 mins,he is also not chucking them under the bus in public,he was 45 mins in the dressing room,a few ears will have been boxed,he is not maureen,he is never going to trash the tem in public

He won’t trash them out of it either.

Damned no matter what Pep does these days.

If he throws the lads under the boss in public (a la Mourinho) we likely have internal issues and plenty on here (rightly, in that case) slag him off for doing so.

If he tries to be positive and supportive of the lads in public, whilst probably absolutely ripping them a new arsehole in the dressing room and then changing things with training/tactics, people come on to say he’s a happy clapper that doesn’t understand the fans and needs to go.

How do you know that?

I mean, all evidence points to the contrary — that he publicly praises them and then privately tells him what he really thinks.

Which, in my opinion, is how it should be done.

I don’t.

But if you could enlighten me as to what points otherwise, i would love to hear it.

Most all reporting of Pep’s methods, including segments of the recent All or Nothing documentary.

He has not had a great week in a couple of ways and i have been critical but he set them up fine today and the players should have done much better, some fans seem to be begging for some big bust up in public, that is never going to happen so they will be left hanging

Horses for courses.

I looked at the all or nothing doc in the opposite way entirely.
I am not sure it’s worth debating then if it is matter of perception of documentation of Pep’s general managerial philosophies and base differences of opinion as to whether public or private criticism is best for the team.

Agreed.

Shots fired

Pep Guardiola: “The last two seasons, it was an owner from the Premier League that says that can’t happen again. City winning the titles that way with 100 points is not good for the Premier League. Now it’s Liverpool, the owner has to be concerned again..."

“Two seasons ago we had 100 points, 19 from United and Mourinho and I don’t know how many from Liverpool. In that period Liverpool were strong, they’re stronger right now, today is not the day to reveal what you have to do."

So, Pep clearly trying figure out his best CL team, which probably isn’t going to include Garcia, THB, Foden or Doyle.

However, it’s hard not to think that he will be here next season. Not sure Khaldoon will play favorites with a young guy like Poch out there waiting for the job.

Pep has cut a frustrating figure for months now, while saying all the right things about players and performance, because I don’t think he wants to roll a grenade across the floor and walk out.

Hard to see at least 4, possibly 6, of these players being here in 6 months, let alone 18, and there is LOTS of rebuilding to be done.

Someone mentioned ”papering over the cracks” in the past, but I think FFP has severely restricted the club from doing what they wanted, but now it is getting to the point that key areas need a serious rebuilding.

Never a dull moment being a Blue, but it’s hard to complain too much about 7 out of 8 domestic trophies in 2 seasons, back to back PLs, in another Cup Final, and still 2nd in the League.

Liverpool have walked it because they’ve taken their chances and had the rub of the green. Hard to say City didn’t have some of that...Aguuuuuuueeeero! anybody?! 100pts in last minute? Sterling’s last minute winners, etc, etc, etc.

No-one can, or should, expect to win the League every year, especially considering a waning City were going up against a building Liverpool; a team we pipped at the post by 1 point and who only lost 1 game all season LAST season. Thankfully, it was to us!

Onwards and upwards, but I think it will be without Peo given the last few games, and what looks like it could be a very difficult night in Madrid in a few weeks.

I've got the feeling that this is a serious turning point.
It felt like that during the game. Even though the league has been gone for months it felt like the Arsenal away defeat in 2012 under Bobby, where Khaldoon himself got involved.

We have had too many wake up calls this season anyway, so I doubt it will change much. Lets hope that this season is just a write off, we have learned in europe and my concerns over Peps effect on the squad is unfounded

It’s clearly known within the club what is going on but this isn’t the time to raise it.

The reality is we were indeed excellent, but missed countless chances and conceded whenever they decided to shoot.

Today was on us. Take the opportunities and we, deservedly, win that game at a canter.
