The Labour Party

She's drifted to 9/2 now absolutely friendlies in the betting. Keir Starmer getting hammered in to short odds on.

I'm not sure why all the right were saying she's a certainty.
yeah - have to say that I am shocked as I had expected her to have shortened by now

mind you was not Corbyn a rank outsider at the equivalent stage where all the noise was in the press as they reported hustings

I am still confident that if she is the option against Starmer facing the final vote she will win - won't press by bet though

Way back, I backed Major to lead the tories at 33/1. He won 2 days later. Food for thought.

Was Abbott so lacking in self-awareness that she thought stating her support would be helpful???

They all live in a bubble, some get told how toxic they are to the middle ground and listen - like Mogg who disappeared pre election. Others dont get told or refuse to listen as within there buble that are popular and respected.

Starmer will win this. The Labour membership is 80% remain and highly politically engaged. Starmer was and is a remainer and was clearly and consistantly pushing the remian argument within the party. The likes of RLB and Barry Gardiner were not, they were doing the opposite if anything. The Labour membership is far more pro EU than it is pro Corbyn - peak Corbynism was 2017, I'm not sure he would have won a leadership challenge mid 2019.

I think Starmer will win too.

He won't win a GE though because he won't purge the party of the people the electorate deem to be poisonous (Corbyn, Abbott, McDonnell, Burgon and so many others) and I don't think voters will forget that there is still a dangerous sect among the Labour MPs with anti-British values.

That same sect will then blame the fact that Starmer was a Remainer in 2019 as the reason for their defeat in 2024 despite the fact that Labour retained a lot of remain seats due to their Brexit position and Brexit wasn't the main factor for why Labour were crucified. That beats taking a look in the mirror at themselves and some of their policies and positions, and seeing how unpopular they were.

Which is exactly why they so rabidly go after the media and now even the pollsters in their own party because it's so much easier to shoot the messenger than to blame themselves.

So Labour members and unions are about to elect a millionaire, privately educated lawyer/landlord as their leader?

YCNMIU.

Starmer won't win an election because he won't be leader for one. If Rayner is his deputy there'll be a coup a year before the next GE and Long-Bailey or someone of her ilk installed. He won't have the authority to dismantle the poison in that party before it gets him.

I wouldn't back him to win at this stage either. But, 5 years is a long time. If Boris fucks up, Starmer does come across as a very competent operator. He's obviously a lot of work to do to change the perception of the party in that time, but having already acknowledged the leave v remain debate is over he's already looking to the future.

Interesting insights - thanks

Loving that tweet by Tracy Brabin today after she was accused of being inappropriately dressed in Parliament. Very funny.

Sorry can't link using this browser, story on the beeb.

The Sky data poll discussed on Sky news this morning has alarming news for the Labour Party and the candidates for leadership

Interestingly - only 3% of people polled stated that have a female leader was preferable. This would be a good news for Starmer if the membership was to reflect this vies - which I doubt it will as I still expect RLB to be voted in.

Of real interest though - the top requirement for the new Leader of the Labour Party was 'To listen'

Hmmm - not seeing much evidence of that either from the Leaders or the most extreme posters on here

Just out of interest, how many said they didn’t care and how many said male preferred?

To be honest it's very difficult to figure out what on earth any of the candidates stand for, since they are all just saying what they think Momentum and the lefties want to hear. "Manifesto was very popular with the public" type bollocks. Or "it was all about Brexit" (and nothing to do with Jeremy and our whole - persecute anyone and anything with more than 2 pence to their name - agenda being absolutely toxic).

Another ISIS sympathiser:

The 'worst day' of his time in Parliament when we voted to go to war with ISIS. Unbelievable.

Also insinuating that the Labour Leader/PM wouldn’t support a foreign intervention unless the Labour membership voted for it.

What about your constituents you fucking cult pushing weirdo?

So essentially what he’s saying is “fuck the Kurds and other innocents being murdered by the caliphate, unless Labour members want to help them”.

Horrific person and thankfully nowhere near office.
