COVID-19 — Coronavirus

I’m 36 on Saturday with an autoimmune disease.

I didn’t know that. - sorry to hear that. Can’t you get your hands on some anti viral drugs, I know there’s a lot of talk on the Japanese end about the same policy of dispensing Preps for people with a higher risk to HIV exposure which seems to have worked really well. Extended self isolation and and anti virals could be an option.

At what point does it become impractical to follow up new cases and try to identify all the people who came in contact with them? What resources would be required to follow up yesterday’s 30+ cases? And if there’s a similar number today? Who actually carries out this work? Is there a specialist unit or is each hospital or trust responsible for doing it? Presumably they’re not still trying to do this in Italy?
It's probably as much about research and understanding how it's spreading as helping people.

I'm 67 I'm asthmatic
Will be cancelling my end of March cruise to Italy, unfortunately insurance doesn't cover me cancelling it cos I'm worried.
If it isn't costing any more then why cancel if you don't get your money back? I'd wait because they might cancel themselves when you will be covered.

Couple of things .... what does the Home Office advice say? if it says dont travel then that may give you a right to claim. Could you get a letter off your doctor advising you not to travel? Again that may give you a right to claim. And as one of the other posters said ...dont cancel but wait as the situation may change,

Well usually the immediate contacts are tested and told to self isolate for a couple weeks for caution. For example a few days ago a secretary in a college had it and 9 colleagues of hers were told to self isolate. They're fine but it's just precaution.
30 new cases is nowhere near the breaking point of the health system. Probably we don't make as extensive a search as we did for the first case here, but family, friends and close colleagues aren't difficult to find and isolate.

Edit: I should specify that at that point colleges had already been closed for students for a while. Only secretaries and faculty went there to work.

There shouldn't be a need to claim, I'm pretty sure that most companies will show goodwill, particularly if someone has a condition that puts them at risk.

If they won't give refunds then they should at least offer rearranged travel for later in the year.

If it was to an area with virtually no cases then fair enough but Italy is a bit different.

Companies showing goodwill on their own, I wouldn't bet on it. Especially if the company has been hit very hard by all this.

The Chinese who appear to have got on top of their outbreak have continued to follow up cases devoting massive resources. The WHO report is most impressive.

This sounds very much like the authorities expect it to be over in 2 months? How else do you interpret that?

I just found that tweet on its own.
