Simon Reeve on his latest documentary in Russia saying its a great shame that there’s so much inequality in Russia today, especially because of their communist past.

Then later admits he doesn’t know much the country.

I think someone needs to tell the **** what communism was like for those living there and the fact inequality was just as rampant, if not more, with added mass poverty.
You are how old ? You lived through communism ? Sound more like worsleyweb every day !

It is possible to read about something and imagine it, no?

I have heard enough from people who lived through it to know what it was like.

I work with a girl from Venezuela who’d knock your head off for defending that ideology.

Living in the Soviet Union for the poor was hell and your Utopianism fantasy doesn’t change that.

Don't be so naïve to believe all that is written.
Don't be so naïve to believe all that is spoken.
So you work with a violent woman.
Living in the capitalist Britain for the poor is hell.

No she’s not violent, not that I know of, it was a figure of speech.

Living in capitalist Britain is great for many, bad for some I agree but it’s infinitely better than living in the Soviet Union. It’s another planet away of difference.

I don’t believe all that I’m told but when there’s a seemingly infinite amount of sources that describe the poverty, misery, brutality and death, it’s kind of hard to ignore it.

Unless you’re a utopian ideologue, then it’s easy.

I used to be a Trotskyist, there’s none more immune than had the disease and got rid of it.

A public service is something that helps or assists the public. How does the BBC do that ? They do not provide anything that other broadcasters don't. They are outdated, over funded and virtually unaccountable, ( which every public service should be) Yes they do have some good radio/tv programmes on but the point is people are forced to pay for them whether they watch it or not. I am happy to pay for schools, libraries etc even though I do not use them as they are there for the benefit of the community at large, the BBC isn't.

How doesn't it provide a service to all? It has TV, Radio, Streaming, Websites all of them cover a whole range of programming for a whole range of the population. We'll all find things we like and don't like that they provide but as a public service broadcaster they are free from commercial influence and that is needed, probably now more than ever.

Take libraries, we can all get the content they provide from other sources but we're happy to pay for them as they help to inform, educate and entertain....like the BBC.

Is the BBC perfect? No. There are issues with it, but nothing that cannot be fixed.

And I don't. You said recently that ITV was shit. That's your opinion. If the licence fee was scrapped and the "public service" was made ITV, would you be advocating that channel as a "Public service" instead?

So it is "Pay for MY BBC, Dammit", isn't it. Sorry but many people have had enough of that concept and support for the corporation, hence the conversation about the fee being scrapped and the BBC made a subscription service.

If ITV was to be the public service broadcaster and was funded by the public via a tax and did away with commercialisation then yes, I'd support it.

So "We should all pay for our Public Service Broadcaster Dammit" in whichever guise it is in.

Interesting you say ` great for many, bad for a few` i would have thought that was the opposite way round, i suppose that depends on your life experiences and who you know

Have you ever been to the Philippines? India? Pakistan? Nigeria? Egypt? Anywhere in Africa? Or South America?

There are a lot of fucked up places with grinding poverty, but for guys like you, it's always down to factors other than its economic system, it's always corruption or cronyism or religion or education.

Capitalism is the greatest wealth creating system we have, but it's fucking useless at spreading it around. Left to its own devices it concentrates power and wealth in the hands of a tiny proportion of the population, and cronyism and corruption are not an aberration, they are an integral part of that process.

There’s different strengths of capitalism.

I’m in favour of it with a safety net for those that fall on hard times. My economic policy is to the left of where we are in this country but not by a lot.

Neoliberalism is something I’m not in favour of.

Absolutely! How many 'peasants' had state-owned dachas on the Black Sea during the Years of communism?
