COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Looking at the WHO data and this mornings reports from South Korea (lowest number of infections in two weeks, with 131 cases confirmed in the past 24 hours), I think the situation in East-Asia is quite encouraging.

South Korea, Singapore, China are much more aggressive in the way they are approaching the virus. I think the data from South Korea is very significant because they have tested about 250,000 people (10 times the UK) and so their number of cases (7513) is much more reliable. I think that this suggests that the penetration of the virus across European populations is actually almost as low as the confirmed cases suggest and not the tip of the iceberg as some may have thought. Up until now, I have viewed the confirmed cases with great scepticism because of the lack of testing in the Western world but the data from countries which do have a problem, but who have tested significantly suggest that it is not that infectious (maybe with the exception of so-called super-spreaders or particular environments such as ships which seem to be ideal conditions for spreading the virus).

If Italy does actually implement its lockdown then there are reasons now to be hopeful. The danger in Europe is that there are other hotspots that we don't yet know about and have yet to emerge.

Light at the end of the tunnel? Expect a massive bounce in the markets this morning although I think they are reacting more to reports of economic easing than covid19 news.

Edit: Just seen China news: China has only 19 new coronavirus cases today. Their government officials have been in Wuhan. This is significant.

I really do,i just don't think it is practical and there is too much money and interests in football here for it to happen
But that isn’t what you said.
You said the players had no more risk playing than staying at home.
I agree it’s about money but you are wrong in the above point about risk and so the games should be cancelled, like they are now doing in countries a week or so ahead of our curve.
The chance to stop the spread of the virus is receding with every passing day and we are sleepwalking into a disaster.

Brave saying your expect a bounce in the markets when the Asian indices already opened up 2% and US futures are up 4%....

‘Sleepwalking’ would suggest accidental. Whereas it appears to be government policy

Not many absentees at yesterday's University of the Third Age course...

I can't see that stoicism lasting. One problem is if people do have an infection (common cold, "bit of a sore throat") it can be passed on - but someone contracting it may then not know whether it is just a cold or coronavirus so they should self-isolate (or at least wear a mask).

There's a big difference between futures activity and investment in a highly liquid market. Lets see if the rally gets sold, or is sustained.

A lot of press running with ourselves, germany and france will probabbly follow iraly and lockdown with next two weeks.

Well why wait? Looks like they want to ride it ou ttill easter as people are already off work then anyway and schools closed to me.
My thoughts are we will try to get through the next 2 weeks, then shut schools and Universities 2 weeks early, effectively adding on 2 weeks to the 2 week Easter holidays, giving us 4 weeks where we can limit interaction, whilst hoping we also get an improvement in the weather.

4 weeks of the kids is enough to finish most of us off!

Cheers for that mate ;-)

Chief medical officer just been on breakfast news saying it’s safe to be in large gatherings ie Cheltenham whereas Italy, China etc is in lock down what the fuck!! mixed messages or what

Been thinking this myself. We might have a great chance of winning the CL this year but if the season gets cancelled then so be it. Some things are more important than football, regardless of what Shanks said all those years ago.

Ha. Would you have this blasé attitude if your team was 25 points clear and on the brink of winning the title in 30 years ? I suspect many would be saying this virus is all a conspiracy to stop us winning the league!

Depends on how many people have the virus. It's a mixed message because the global situation is mixed. Chinese and Korea absolutely routing the virus whilst the europeans and US getting hit. Temporal gap.

£3,500 will be given to you to be infected with a mild dose of corona virus so they can try and get a vaccine, the poor in society being used as guinea pigs can’t see anyone well off volunteering:(
