Testing: of course they aren't testing everyone who feels a bit fluey.

There is only a finite number of test kits, and there's a whole load of other things with similar effects (common flu, colds, etc). If they tested everyone who came up with a sore throat, there would be queues miles long (putting people in close proximity, which they don't want), they wouldn't have staff numbers to deal with it (irritating and provoking complaint), and they would run out of kits/analysis capability (irritating those queueing, and preventing them testing those who really need it).

I don't think there is a 'win' scenario that they could use for everyone.

The government waffle are not helpful because they are non-specific, coupled with a distrust that politicians will tell the truth. The health officers are clearer and should be dealing with data. The politicians should take note of Klopp's response when asked.

We're a few days back from Italy, and also protected to some degree by geography. Being a bit behind, the need to take dramatic (and unpopular) action is less urgent, so they won't. I'm quite impressed by the Italian approach to dealing with it - quite tough and popularity be damned.

China tested 1.5m so far

Korea are testing 10k people a day and have even set up drive through test centers.

we have tested 25k people in total.

It will go up but maybe to 10,000 max is my take and fade as spring comes in earnest. We wont be talking about this in June.

I take it you didn't see the latest Dr Campbell video where the Chinese are reporting this thing survives for days on surfaces at 37'c?

Summer will help with increased UV but temperature isnt looking like its going to help that much.

We know from posters on here that unless you have come back from an affected area, or have come into contact with a known case (who would even know this?), then it’s difficult for you to actually get a test as things stand.

So I dare say our figures are not accurate, we are turning people down for testing.

Thats a very good point, i suppose they can only report who they test.

Haha, Twitter have cancelled external face to face meetings, we had to do a call.

I just hope once the world recovers from this that everyone keeps up the heightened hygiene. Absolutely no reason why washing our hands, covering when coughing, etc. shouldn’t be the norm. It’s just basic hygiene.
FFS why have they cancelled them, to save on expenses?

I was on a conference call yesterday with a regional VP and he took the last five minutes to read out the WHO general guidance for reducing the risk of transmission within offices so that all those still in our physical locations in the US (as that was the group on this call).

It actually went quite well until right as he was ending the call and saying good day to everyone he started a sneeze and, instead of sticking his nose to the inside of his elbow or grabbing a tissue, he let it go right at the screen, in full view of the camera.

What I hadn’t realised until I got off the call was that his assistant was apparently sitting across from his desk and she got the full brunt of it. Apparently he was so embarrassed he made up an excuse for needing to go to a separate meeting elsewhere in the building and didn’t come back to his office for the rest of the day.

Yeah, based on 111’s script, they are mostly testing people that have returned from Italy/Spain etc but we know there’s more cases than that. I know @dozzie26 had to practically beg for one. So essentially, shit loads of cases are not being reported, but I get the impression that’s what Boris wants, it allows him to do nothing for longer.

the army and police couldnt controll the numbers in that case, it would be every man for himself, a lawless society which could see you killed for your can of corned beef

corned beef they could have but i would hide the key hahahah

Lucky: [...] and the earth will stop spinning and the aliens will invade but time will tell and suffers like the divine Miranda with those who for reasons unknown but time will tell are plunged in torment plunged in fire whose fire flames if that continues and who can doubt it will fire the firmament that is to say blast hell to heaven so blue still and calm so calm with a calm which even though intermittent is better than nothing but not so fast and considering what is more that as a result of the labours left unfinished crowned by the Acacacacademy of Anthropopopometry of Essy-in-Possy of Testew [...]

Well I've been feeling off for the last 5 days, think it's some sort of flu and the last 48 hours have been the worst. Don't think for one moment I've got it (who knows could have been in contact with anyone) but it does make you worry about passing it on.

Luckily I'm off work this week, rang 111 this morning (8am) and i'm still waiting for a call back from a clinician. They're obviously really busy but I think it's a lot worse than the numbers are letting on.

I read earlier that 150,000 people die every day in the world. 100,000 of these are from old age related illness effectively.

I still think there is more to this than meets the eye because the actions being taken are so drastic and yet this has only killed 4000 people in a month, most of whom fall into the “old age” category.

This action is going to absolutely cripple the economy if it is not sorted soon. Once people start to panic, they stop spending and save instead as they fear the worst. It’s Human Nature and it’s what happened when we had the panic around the Financial crisis.

Maybe the drastic action is to ensure this does stop soon and the economy doesn’t suffer but I can see loads of companies going bust if this carries on more than a few months. People will curtail all non essential spending.

No idea, doubt it. This was last week too, so decision was made fairly early in.

I’m off to LinkedIn on Friday for a public event, as far as I’m aware that’s still on so at least they’re not overreacting. Kind of funny when you consider they’re probably acting in the way same manner as the majority of their users. Twitter - panic, make a rash decision. LinkedIn - calm, don’t rush.

The point that we've tested comparatively few is fair.

I think it's easier when you can build factories/hospitals on spec, at least as importantly have the will to build them, and have a culture of accepting regulation - I think South Korea would be very orderly, far more so than here.
